About this talk. In this 47-minute Easter retreat session, Kyabje Rinpoche explores the 12 links of dependent origination within a single lifetime, showing how ethical vows and dedication prayers activate karma to produce favorable rebirth. Using vow observance as a concrete example, he traces each step: precepts impress on consciousness; aspiration prayers act like water on a seed; craving and grasping strengthen the latency until karma becomes conclusive; consciousness enters the womb and the results unfold. He then presents two meditation modes—following the chain forward from ignorance through suffering, and reversing backward to expose ignorance as the root. Throughout, the emphasis is understanding this cycle of rebirth and how genuine recognition awakens the determination to escape. For serious practitioners ready to engage the logic and meditation of dependent origination.

We have attained this special human life by which we can benefit not only ourselves, but others also. So, we should rejoice in this type of life with its special qualities that it possesses. So, it’s imperative that we make use of this human life with its special qualities and bringing about the welfare of others and ourselves. Simply having the capacity to bring this about is not enough. If we don’t use this capacity, then it’s of no benefit.
How can we bring about the complete welfare of both ourselves and others? Developing a correct type of motivation, then out of that will flow the right type, right types of conduct which will bring about the welfare that we’re all seeking. Motivation? We should reflect in terms of holding others more dear than ourselves and seeking to cherish others and to benefit them. And to that end, seeking to eliminate the sufferings of others and bring happiness to others.
I think it’s almost impossible to to bring about one’s own happiness, eliminate one’s own problems without thinking to wish to bring about the happiness of others and to alleviate their suffering. If if we seek our own happiness alone, then finding our own happiness and eliminating our own suffering will have no relationship to the welfare of others. But on the other hand, if we seek to eliminate the suffering of others and to bring them happiness, then there will exist a relationship which out of that motivation which will bring ourselves happiness will help to eliminate our own suffering. By bringing about the welfare of others, by bringing others happiness, eliminate their suffering, that we indirectly will eliminate our own problems, that we will indirectly find our own happiness. So our motivation should be to lead all others to a purest complete state of happiness.
Happiness. It’s a necessary facet of bringing about this end, is that we individually eliminate our various faults and bring to consummation our excellent excellent qualities. By eliminating our individual faults bringing to consummation our excellent qualities then we can be empowered whereby to lead all sentient beings to a purest state of happiness. And in order to achieve that end, it’s necessary to listen to the various teachings on the Dharma and whereby to put them into practice through meditation. So, to, for the next three minutes, to generate such a motivation for listening to the present teaching.
Why you? From a verse by Tsongkhapa, in which, in which he says to, to, to, call a fox a lion is a gross exaggeration. Likewise, those past non-Buddhist masters. So just as it’s a gross exaggeration to call a timid fox a lion likewise those non-Buddhist teachers who do not show what is to not teach what is to be adopted. Those non-Buddhist teachers who do not show what is to be adopted and what is to be rejected as a gross exaggeration to speak of them as guides.
Then on the other hand, there’s an expression, what do you say, explication. Emma. Emma means, Oh, joy. Something like that. Oh, great joy.
My teacher is, there’s none higher. Is because she unmistakenly sets forth the teachings on dependent arising and emptiness. Distinguishing between a teacher, a real teacher, and someone who simply pretends to be a teacher, someone who can actually teach unerringly the the Dharma dependent arising. So, these dharmas are extremely precious, the Dharma of emptiness, interdependent arising because they are the means by which we can be liberated from existence, the means by which we can eliminate all our various faults and bring the consummation of excellent qualities, that’s to say how we can achieve Buddhahood. So, yes, today we discussed the 12 links of dependent origination in terms of of its of one round of 12 links over two lifetimes.
Now we’re going to discuss it in terms of one lifetime. So, we should understand well what is being discussed here because the fact is that at the time of our death we want to attain a positive type of rebirth. We don’t want a negative type of rebirth. We want we where be born in the future. We in fact desire to be born in a very positive place such as an area of as a celestial being or that taking a human life whereby we can practice the Dharma.
So, it’s choice in the future. If we want to be born as a celestial being, that’s okay. If we want to be born as a human whereby we can practice the Dharma and benefit sentient beings, that’s that’s a good choice too. So, whatever we choose is okay. You know, for example, if we, if today we were to abandon killing sentient beings and as a means to, in the future, to achieve human life whereby we can practice the Dharma.
That is to say we begin to observe ethics. We cease to kill, we cease to steal, we cease sexual various types of sexual impropriety. That is to say, begin to abandon unskillful actions. And, this is the way we can practice well. For example, when we take the twenty-four hour Mahāyāna precepts for that we take them and observe, we take these various vows and we, this is the means to observe ethics and out of this, we observe this ethics in order to, in the future, take rebirth as either a special being or to take rebirth as a human being?
So, you know, we think we reflect to ourselves in order that in the future that I can achieve a human life, again, that I am going to observe ethics. So, there’s a great emphasis on this I am going to observe ethics. And this I am going to observe ethics out of this serving as the motivation which is based upon a misconception of the nature of the I, but even though it is, motivates us to create actions which is the second link of dependent origination. So, having observed ethics during the course of the day, that night when one goes to bed, one makes various prayers of dedication, dedicating the positive energy created out of observing ethics that in the future I might attain a human life whereby I can practice the Dharma and be able to benefit all sentient beings. And so, action leaves an impression upon the consciousness and thereby we come to the third link of dependent origination consciousness.
Having impressed a particular karmic latency on the consciousness, then each day that we were to dedicate this action to the attainment of a human life in the future, then the capacity of that, that potential grows greater and greater through through this process of rededicating. So, is the consciousness which has the latencies impressed upon it and there will occur during the course of that of the life because of the fact of impermanence death will arise will happen So, explaining this in terms of one life, there were six causes over the course of one lifetime. So, now we are in a situation where that we have impressed the latencies of actions observing ethics upon our consciousness and we are experiencing the process of death. And, in the course of death, if we were to, we make prayers of aspiration, praying that by the power of having observed ethics in the path, I be able to achieve a human life where I will be able to carry on a practice of Dharma and be able to benefit sentient beings. And this will act as the the eighth link that is to say craving.
This will activate the latency that you have implanted on your consciousness. This this this prayer of aspiration is the eighth link of craving. Craving acts as like water, watering the seed. It begins to activate the potential in the seed, and as the potential, the potency of the seed begins to increase, then the ninth link that is grasping arises. And then there reaches a point when the latency is about to be activated.
There is, the potency potency has come to a point of almost expression where there is no doubt, there is no wavering, there is no fluctuation in the possibility of other Karmas arising, that this is definitely about to ripen. This is conclusive conclusive that this Karma is going to ripen, and this is the tenth link, the coming to be, fully activated latency. So, followed the course of the dependent origination over six causes during the course of this lifetime in terms of having observed ethics. There were the six causes of the first basic ignorance, the second karmic formations, the third consciousness, the eighth link craving, the ninth grasping, and the tenth coming to be. These are six causes occurring over the course of this lifetime.
And then when the So there’s a death and the arising of the intermediate state are simultaneous, just like a balance that it’s an either or situation. Once the death has occurred, then one automatically begins the intermediate state. And and during this intermediate state, the the being is now searching out an appropriate place to take rebirth, and this would be in terms of in the case of a human life, parents to which one had a karmic relationship with and upon finding such an appropriate situation when the consciousness would then enter into the union of the sperm and ovum. So, they’re going to occur during the course of this second life six results. And the first of these is birth which is the eleventh link and this is the entry of the consciousness into the union of the sperm and ovum.
This is defined birth. In worldly terms, we usually define birth as the child actually coming from the mother’s womb, but here birth is defined as the conscious entering into this union of sperm and ovum. So there are going to follow six results. And the first of these is the result of birth, which is the eleventh link, and simultaneous with birth is the fourth link of name and form. And the second moment subsequent to birth begins since the body is momentarily arising and disintegrating, is impermanent.
The second moment begins the aging process, the twelfth link. And then as the body is formed to its completion, within the womb, is, there comes about the complete development of the sixth faculties, and this is the fifth link. And as was explained yesterday, the Sixth Sense faculties are complete, when having fully developed sixth sense faculties, when the consciousness through the medium of the appropriate sense faculty comes in, meets an object, then contact arises. For example, the when the eye sees an object, then this is considered, this is called contact. When the tongue consciousness comes in contact with a flavor, there is contact, the sixth link.
So probably when the sixth sense faculties have fully developed and this would be the approximate time of the actual birth and is the worldly sense externally, the baby externally coming out. And the baby having actually taken a normal type of birth and it begins to sound, it begins to see colors colors and shapes, begins to hear sounds, taste, flavors. Out of that various feelings arise, pleasant, unpleasant, the seventh link. So, are many ways to present the ripening of karma in terms of lifetimes. The one that we’ve just gone over is in terms of six causes and six results.
These, they’re the cause having been created in one lifetime and the result occurring in the next lifetime. So, this is one possibility. So this would as the illustration we just made use of would be would illustrate the possibility of having created a cause and then and in this context of observing ethics and take in the next life taking rebirth as a human or a celestial being. And the same would occur according to if we created the karmic formations of taking rebirth as a hell being hungry ghost or as an animal. So, over the course of these 12 links, in their ripening we may take rebirth as a human being and then as a celestial being, and then when there is various karmic potentials are exhausted we will then proceed to take rebirth as a hell being and then after that perhaps the hungry ghost and after that as an animal and then again we will take rebirth as a celestial being as a human being continually cycling through the six types of migrators and this is cyclic existence.
So, you know, looking at it from this point of view, that’s simply due to the the mechanism of the 12 links of dependent origination are continually cycling through various types of migrations one after another, one after another. Various links of these 12 links of the different existences are coming into force. And it seems as if there’s no end to this process. But is there liberation from this process of cyclic existence? It’s necessary that we cultivate an understanding of the 12 links of dependent origination that we should make use of it in our meditation.
See how we continually revolving through the mechanism of these 12 links in the various six types of migrations. And each one of these we have to undergo the various difficulties, various sufferings of birth, aging, disease, and death. And this process is never ending while we remain in cyclic existence. That we have to begin to see the faults of cyclic existence. And after gaining a wearisome, a sense of weariness out of this continual process while we remain within cyclic existence, and seeing the faults of remaining within cyclic existence, there will arise a desire to be liberated from cyclic existence, which is the definite renunciation.
In the meditation on the 12 links dependent origination, are two ways that we can meditate it, meditate on it. We can meditate it in the mode of entry into cyclic existence and a reversal out of cyclic existence. So, way of meditating in terms of entry into cyclic existence is by reflecting upon the fact that due to the cause of due to the existence of ignorance, under the influence of ignorance, we create karmic actions creating karmic formations which are upon the consciousness which causes us to take name and form which act as a condition for the sixth sense faculties which brings about contact out of which arises feelings, out of which arises craving, out of which arises grasping, of which arises coming to be, out of which arises birth, out of which arises aging and death. This is the way we meditate in terms of the latter acting a cause, the former acting as a cause for the latter. Meditating in terms of reversal out of cyclic existence is by beginning with the latter and working back to the former in the sense of that we see that we begin to question where does the suffering of aging and death occur?
Where does that, from where does that come? Well, that comes from birth. Well, where does birth come? That comes from coming to be. And working back from the latter toward the former.
And then getting to the point where the third link consciousness and where did where did that consciousness arise and rose in terms of propelling karma or karmic formations and where did that where did that karma arise from ignorance we trace it back back to the root, the foundation is ignorance So, out of these two modes of reflecting upon the 12 links, one through seeing how we got to where we
