About this talk. In this 47-minute teaching on the Wheel of Life, Kyabje Rinpoche brings the bhavachakra alive through specific visual detail and compelling narrative: the six realms (hells hot and cold; animals; hungry ghosts; humans; gods and demigods), Mount Meru’s jealousy-provoking fruit tree, and Dharmarāja’s karmic mirror—an impossible-to-deceive device illustrated with an anecdote about a Dharma book seller paid in lentils. The three center animals—cock, snake, pig—represent attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the afflictive emotions that keep the wheel spinning. He then explains the 12 links of dependent origination: how ignorance plants the seed of karma on consciousness, and how craving and grasping activate these latencies toward rebirth. For practitioners seeking visual grounding in how saṃsāra functions.

These beans, the color of the various types of beings, intermediate beings. If we were to list those, for example, intermediate being of hell has a black color. The intermediate animal is blue, God, white, human, yellow, hungry ghost, clear like the water. Transparent. And then there are then with reference to the actual taking and rebirth, there are four types of birth.

There is birth from womb, birth from egg, spontaneous rebirth, and birth from moisture. With the spontaneous birth is simply having searched for a place of rebirth. One sees a appropriate place where one wishes to take rebirth, and simply by thinking to rebirth there, one appears completely embodied without having to go through the intermediate stages within a parent. So one spontaneously appears with the complete body. And then rebirth from moisture is, you know, this would be the types of insects.

You know, there are many types of insects which are born in the summer due to heat. And then there’s Then there is egg birth. There would be, for example, birds born from eggs. Then there is birth from womb, and that would be, for example, human beings. So there are human beings who are born from womb, human beings are born from eggs, and human beings who are born spontaneously.

The first human inhabitants of this world were born spontaneously. They weren’t were not born from parents. The actual taking of rebirth, which is the eleventh link, is when the migrating consciousness enters into the union of sperm and ovum of the parents in the case of a human being. And then proceeding from there, the various results as was explained just last teaching where once the consciousness has entered into this union, then name and form arise, the sixth sense faculties, contact and feelings. Now, the second moment after birth, some ways of presenting set this as the beginning of death.

Others say this is the beginning of aging, the second moment So this twelfth link is a combination of aging and death. Aging beginning the second moment after birth where the aggregates begin to deteriorate, and then the actual final deterioration which is death. So this is just been a very coarse presentation of the 12 links of dependent origination. It hasn’t been detailed at all. So with respect to karma or actions, there there are both skillful and unskillful karmas.

So there is is both the process of the 12 links of dependent origination arising out of skillful actions and unskillful actions. So, would, what would be the course of proceeding in terms of unskillful actions over the process of the 12 links of dependent origination. That through the force of being motivated by ignorance, one engages in an action which creates an unskillful propelling karma which is then imprinted on the consciousness. Unskillful propelling karma. So, we finished three links.

We basic ignorance, karmic formation, and consciousness. So, there is now the consciousness which has a negative propelling karmic latency imprinted upon it, and now due to the force of the eighth and ninth link craving and grasping, it is as if watered, that is, propelling karmic latency is now being activated. And this leads to the tenth link, the coming to be or becoming which is the latency which is just about to ripen, to express itself. Which leads to the intermediate rebirth, that is the consciousness is then propelled to enter into a particular place of rebirth. Then the second moment after rebirth begins aging.

And then wherever the rebirth is taking place, there now follows the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh links, name and form, sixth sense faculties, contact and feelings arise. So whether one is being reborn in a bad migration or a happy migration, this procedure would be followed. So in the actual place which migration will take place is one of the is as depicted here, one of the six types of migrators. And for example, this lower section of the six levels of this drawing, it shows the level of the hell and they’re divided into hot hell and cold hell. So hot hells are to the south and cold hells are in the north.

Then there’s the level of animals. Then the level of hungry ghosts on the right side. So the there are two drawings, two sections of the drawing on the upper part. The right hand section, the upper right hand section is the level of the human beings and then the left hand section, they’ve combined in one section the gods and the demigods.

So the demigods live at the base of Mount Meru, and the Gods themselves live on Mount Meru. And there is a tree you can see growing and the roots of the tree are at the base where the demigods live. But the fruit is ripening in the level of the of the gods and it’s a very delicious fruit and they’re always fighting over this. So the demigods have a great deal of jealousy. Because they because they’re jealous about the gods getting all their fruit.

So if you notice in the bottom section, which is in the hell area, there’s a central figure and that central figure is Yama, the Lord of Death. And all those within cyclic existence, those who have not had direct realization of emptiness upon their death, they must come before Yama. So coming before the Lord of Death, one is then judged as to according to the quality of your life, as to how much how many skillful actions, and how much unskillful actions you’ve created. And those who have created a great deal of skillful action, you know, in this circle here, they’re allowed to pass upwards and things go very well for them.

Those who have predominantly been involved in unskillful actions, they are as are led they are tied and bound and led into the various bad migrations such as the hot hell and cold hell. Rather than Yama, I think it’s Dharmarāja. Dharmarāja. He can’t be tricked. He’s quite he’s quite fair about how he metes out the disposition of your skillful and unskillful actions, the results of that.

So he’s extremely fair, He doesn’t miss even the slightest positive action that you’ve created or even this, but also doesn’t miss the slightest negative action you’ve created. So we might think, well, how does he know what I did? You know, I’ve kept my actions pretty secret. So how did how does Karma Rāja come to know about all the things that we do? Because, at the time of our birth, there is a celestial being which is born along with us.

And whatever we do, wherever we go, this body follows us inseparably and it’s keeping accounts of all the various actions that we create. And at the time of our death it presents the ledger to Dharmarāja. And, at the time of our death and the celestial being presents the ledger of the counting of our various actions to Dharmarāja and if there’s doubts, then there is a, he has a large mirror which, which can be looked into. Because and everything that we’ve done appears in this mirror. So there’s no chance that we can lie or we can trick saying that we didn’t do what we did do.

So there was one person who came before Dharmarāja and Dharmarāja was questioning him about his actions during the course of his life and he said, According to the ledger, you sold some Dharma books. Is that true? No, no, no, no.

It never happened. No, according to the court, you sure? No, it never happened. No question. And so he said, Well, let’s take a look in the mirror.

So I looked in the mirror and there’s this guy selling Dharma books. And he’s getting peas as payment, lentils — lentils as payment. And he’s got this big pile of lentils for from having sold his books. So everything this this mirror cannot be fooled. Everything appears in this karmic mirror.

So according to the skillfulness of one’s actions, Dharmarāja says, leads you upward into the happy migrations or he brings you down into the bad migrations where various types of suffering suffering are a result. So, what keeps us cycling in this continual experiencing of happiness and suffering, and what is it that prevents us from liberation and keeps the wheel of cyclic existence turning? It is in this central circle where it is represented by a cock, a snake, and a pig. So these three animals symbolize the three root afflictive emotions. The cock because it has great desires, is a very desirous being, it symbolizes attachment.

The snake because it’s very aggressive, symbolizes hatred. And the pig because it’s extremely stupid symbolizes ignorance. And these are what keeps the cyclic existence turning. So, we’re not saying these are symbolic. These animals are symbolic of these three.

We’re not saying these animals that hatred, for example, is a snake. We’re saying it’s symbolic of a snake. But, the actual three afflictive emotions are within our own minds. That is to say, we have within our own minds ignorance, attachment, and anger. What is it that actually turns cycling?

Is it keeps the cyclic existence turning? Is it something outside or inside? What is it, now we have to examine, what is it that brings us suffering? Is it something of ourselves or inside of ourselves?

We have to look to see whether our enemy is inside ourselves or outside of ourselves. What do you think? Opinion that it is something other than themselves, like other people who are continually bringing them their problems. But, in fact, it is nothing other than our own afflictive emotions and actions which keep us turning within cyclic existence.

No one else can cause us to to revolve in cyclic existence. Nothing outside of ourselves. Some Some people simply don’t understand that one’s enemy is within oneself and they see the enemy outside themselves. They see it is something outside themselves which is harming them, is bringing them obstacles. So, these three root afflictive emotions have as their root ignorance.

Attachment and anger arise dependent upon ignorance. The ultimate foundation of cyclic existence is ignorance as it was depicted in the 12 links of dependent origination where it is initiated by ignorance. So as I mentioned previously in in the the the the way of explaining the 12 links of dependent origination, there was one way in which it explained in terms of refuting those who did not accept previous birth. And this, the 12 links are what is emphasized that there are three causes bringing about four results. The three causes bring The non-existence of previous lives, the proof is explained in terms of the three causes, the first three links bringing about the next four results.

In refuting those who hold a distorted view of the nonexistence of future lives, then it’s explained in terms of the three Then, then three, then it’s presented in terms of three causes. The three causes being craving, grasping, and coming to be, bringing about two results, birth and aging and death as one. So it would be very useful to understand this presentation which is made use of in order to refute those who hold a view that future lives do not exist in terms of three causes and four results. For example, in order that we take rebirth from previous existence is necessary to rely upon a flood of afflictions and karma. So, the reason for taking rebirth is that from previous actions created in the past life.

And these actions are presented as the second of the 12 links, karmic formations. And this, but in turn, these actions have to be motivated. So, this motivator of these actions of karmic formations is ignorance, the first link. And this this karmic formations are not simply dissipated that they are implanted upon a consciousness that the latencies are impressed upon the consciousness which is the third link of dependent origination. So looking at these three, ignorance is likened to the planter of a seed.

Karmic formations is a seed which is planted, and consciousness is the field in which the seed is planted. So is the planter, the planter is ignorance, the seed which is being planted is karmic formation and the field is consciousness. So these three causes arise in a previous life. Then in terms of the four results which arise out of these three causes, the four results occurring during the course of the present life, then there are, there is the embodiment and the resources. The first two of these four results establish the embodiment. The latter two of the four links establish the resources. So in explaining these, the fourth link, name and form, is the gross establishment of the embodiment or the body. And then the fifth, sixth sense faculties, is the completion of the establishment of the body.

The fourth link is that one achieves a rough embodiment, and the fifth, the details of the body are established.
