About this talk. In this 47-minute teaching from a 1991 Easter retreat, Kyabje Rinpoche traces the 12 links of dependent origination forwards and backwards—how ignorance drives suffering, and how realizing emptiness stops the cycle entirely. He explores the key difference between Lesser Vehicle practitioners (who realize emptiness but remain bound by residual karma, liberating in one to seven lifetimes) and Greater Vehicle bodhisattvas (who take rebirth by compassion, not karma). He shows how understanding this mechanism benefits all practitioners: beginners develop ethical restraint; intermediate practitioners generate genuine renunciation; advanced practitioners develop stable compassion for all sentient beings trapped in the same mechanism. A Q&A section addresses whether an inherently existent “I” can take rebirth, with Rinpoche emphasizing that conviction in past and future lives—understood through karma’s causes and effects—is worth more than any wealth.

And thinking and reflecting this way we develop a desire desire to be liberated from cyclic existence and we begin to understand what the root of cyclic existence is ignorance. So, to end cyclic existence, to be liberated from cyclic existence, it’s necessary that we eliminate ignorance. It’s a root. Then we, we can then move back forward through the 12 links in term, in the sense that we can trace how liberation is attained by through the process of eliminating ignorance. Can understand that ignorance, then there will be no more karmic formations.
If there’s no more karmic formations, then there’s no more conditioned consciousness. And we work all the way up to the end product. There will be no more aging, there will be no more suffering, there will be no more undesired, there will be no more death. So, if we, if we eliminate the previous, then the latter cannot arise. And by eliminating our suffering, we have attained liberation.
So then we can also look at liberation in terms of the reverse order also. We looked at the entering into and the reversing out of cyclic existence we’ve looked at the liberation in terms of entering into and the reverse order by which a liberation is attained. We begin with the last link, the twelfth link, aging and death. And we say, in order to cease death, what do I have to do? Well, I have to cease.
I have to cease rebirth. And tracing back in this way, that if in order to cease the latter, we must cease the former. Through meditating on the 12 links of dependent origination we can gain direct insight into emptiness, attain the level of a superior, and then by increasing the force of our meditation we can eliminate all of the afflictive emotions and achieve liberation. As was explained in that story previously where the the king Indrabhuti by meditating on the 12 links of dependent origination had direct insight into. That work?
We can see that if we cease ignorance, we will cease karmic formations. And in order to cease karmic formations, we must realize, in order to cease ignorance, we must realize emptiness. And therefore, out of this understanding that we will cultivate a realization of emptiness. What is it that brings about a cessation of ignorance? It is the wisdom realizing emptiness, without the wisdom realizing emptiness, there’s no way that we can cease ignorance.
When do we cease ignorance? At the moment when we have direct realization of emptiness then the ignorance as in the context of the 12 links will be ceased. We will cease ignorance. When we have direct realization of emptiness at that time, then the ignorance which is the first link of the 12 links of dependent origination will cease.
When we cease ignorance then this first link ignorance basic ignorance when that ceases then karmic formations have ceased when that when that ceases consciousness ceases. But, though we have eliminated ignorance, we are not able to at that moment to eliminate cravings and grasping. So when, when we have had a direct realization of emptiness, we eliminate basic ignorance. Therefore, we are never, we never again create new propelling karma, that is types of karma which perpetuate cyclic existence. We no longer create actions which perpetuate cyclic existence after that point.
But there still remains the previous propelling karma created within the consciousness, the types of karma which will perpetuate cyclic existence. They still have their potency. They have not developed the result as of yet. Though we have direct realization of emptiness, by the condition of craving and grasping, these remaining propelling karmas can be activated and one can be perpetuated in cyclic existence in that way. So, here presents a difference between the lesser vehicle and the greater vehicle.
A lesser vehicle superior, that is to say someone who has had direct realization of emptiness, because they still have propelling karmas on their mind stream which can be activated. Though they have direct realization of emptiness, continue to take rebirth within cyclic existence due to the force of Karma. On the other hand, greater vehicle superiors, they no longer take rebirth under the force of karma. But even even these great these lesser vehicle superiors though they have to take they will take birth under the force of Karma in the future they were they can quickly achieve liberation perhaps in one or two lives or at the most six or seven lives. No So maybe maybe you haven’t you haven’t enjoyed this explanation of the 12 link that you can read the text again. Your mind’s not very happy about it.
It’s very good that you’re not happy about it. So that’s because why is that? Because we should see the fault of cyclic existence. The cyclic existence is no good. Seeing this, there arises in the mind the thought, this cyclic existence is a nasty place.
I want to get out of here. And one develops a desire for liberation. If we think cyclic existence is a really happy place, then we’re never going to develop desire to be free from it. We’ll keep we’ll want to stay longer. So, when we when we see well that the faults of cyclic existence there will arise the mind of renunciation, the determination to go.
When we see cyclic existence within terms of our self then the very suffering that it entails, then we simply will not be happy to remain in such a situation and we would develop a desire to be liberated from it. We develop, in other words, we wish to renounce it, get rid of it. When, but if we extend this and we understand that other people are also involved in cyclic existence going through the same processes that we are then we develop compassion. So, is one of the best ways to develop compassion for sentient beings in general. That is to say, to see them in terms of the mechanism of the 12 links of dependent origination which they are involved in.
That they are involved in this continual turning within the cycle and that this is the same for everyone. Everyone in this situation and out of this will gain and will develop a sense of compassion that is wouldn’t it be wonderful if they were free from the suffering not only the suffering but the causes of their suffering it’s because we don’t understand that others are undergoing the same processes that we’re involved in that we don’t develop compassion for them. Once we understand the nature of our situation and others involved in the same exact situation, then we will develop a stable, real compassion for them. If we do not develop compassion, for example, the compassion which arises out of seeing other people involved in the process of the 12 links dependent origination, then there’s no way that we can gain the experience of the great vehicle. So this cultivating an understanding of the 12 links of dependent origination can bring about development of all the levels of capacities of beings.
Terms of the being of small capacity and through an understanding the 12 links dependent origination, not wishing to take rebirth in a bad migration, one begins to observe ethics, to abandon the causes for taking the rebirth there, the various unskillful actions. In terms of being a middling capacity, seeing how the mechanism of 12 links is operating in terms of perpetuating cyclic existence, one develops a desire to be liberated from it and develops the mind of renunciation. In terms of the great vehicle, by seeing that not only ourselves, all sentient beings are involved in the same mechanism, the 12 Links of Dependent Origination, one develops compassion. So, whatever our ends are, they can be achieved in dependence upon cultivating understanding the 12 links of dependent origination. It is like, you know, like, America, know, captains of captains of industry.
You walk into their office and they have the complete apparatus where they’re controlling their vast empire from. And this is like the 12 links of dependent origination. So, you know, is like the these offices are like the command posts where they can just by pushing a button, can affect things worldwide. So you can go in that office and it can achieve any end you want. So even even though when you were offered such an office where they have all the equipment to run a vast empire, if you do not have wisdom nor make effort, then the office is not going to be of use to you.
You just kind of you kind of look look around, kind of dumb dumbfounded. This is like a great ship by which we can travel wherever we like. We want to go to India and back we can do that. Though we have a great ship, might not know how to navigate it and we just become confused. So, it’s important that we reflect upon the past and the future rebirths that we can understand that what we are at present has come about through previous, through previous, the actions of a previous rebirth and what we do now is going to affect our future rebirth.
So, it’s extremely beneficial to assert the existence of past and future lives. But in terms of we want to be free of suffering and we want to achieve happiness and we achieve this in dependence upon creating skillful actions and the abandon ment of unskillful actions. So if I were to ask you whether you have certainty about the existence of past and future lives or you have some doubts about it, would you say? Whether you believe in past and future life? You have doubts.
You have doubts. You’re not sure. So, it’s really wonderful to be able to be able to assert the existence of past and future lives because if when we if we look at where this present life has come from, and then if we understand where this present life is going to take us in the future, if we assert that it is coming from something we did in the past and what we do now is going to have an effect in the future, then we will begin to be careful about our karma. We will begin to adopt skillful actions more, and we begin to abandon unskillful actions more because we realize that they’re going to have some effect. This in itself is worth more than having $10,000,000.
There’s nothing there’s no quality great better than this to bring oneself happiness. If we convince ourselves to think that negative actions are going to bring me suffering in the future, then we will begin to naturally cease them. If we begin to think that skillful actions will bring me happiness in the future, then we’re going to begin to naturally begin to cultivate them more. We’ll develop a liking for skillful actions and a sense of dislike for negative actions. And it’s through dependence upon this way of practice that abandoning unskillful action, cultivating skillful actions that eventually we will experience a happiness bereft of any suffering.
So, are the pure views or the correct views set forth by the Buddha in terms of the assertion of the existence of past and future lives and that from skillful actions comes happiness, from unskillful actions comes suffering. Yeah. What’s your doubt? So, this is, I mean, general, having skepticism is very valuable especially for those of greatest intelligence that they should always investigate everything. They use their analytical reasoning to test it, to see whether it’s acceptable or not.
But, and but once one has investigated it and see no fault, one should come to some conclusion, not to simply continue to investigate one’s entire life without coming to conclusion, then your life is wasted. So, for example, you think about where did your body come from? Where did your body come from? Where did your where did your mind come from? I came along with it.
Sure. So you you’re correct in thinking that the body of this life came from our parents. But now we have to go on and question, well where did our consciousness of this life come from? So the being which took rebirth in this life is dependent upon that consciousness and this consciousness came from past life. So the being the taker of the rebirth was the being which would which dependent upon the consciousness of conscious previous life consciousness came along with the being and took rebirth in this life.
So, as was explained in the course of the death process, there’s a different levels of consciousnesses and there are coarse consciousness and subtle and most subtle, and is the subtle consciousness which comes from the previous life and goes through the intermediate state and then enters into the present rebirth. This is a this helps in in the looking at the 12 links of dependent origination shows how the dependent arising of rebirth develops. So your question is if there’s no inherently existent eye, then who is it that takes rebirth? So that the taker of rebirth is the eye which is imputed to the five aggregates. That eye is the taker of rebirth.
So, the reason that we’re forced to take rebirth under the power of karma and afflictive emotions. The taking of rebirth doesn’t mean necessarily that we haven’t realized emptiness. bodhisattva superior has had direct realization of emptiness, but still takes rebirth. So, within cyclic existence, so you mean taking rebirth within cyclic existence? So, the bodhisattva takes rebirth under the influence of compassion, not karma and afflictive emotion.
So though the eye is merely imputed to the five aggregates, that is to say, though the I is empty of inherent existence, that I, that person doesn’t realize it. Just as we, all of us, have an I which is empty of inherent existence, but don’t realize that. Though it’s empty, we don’t realize it’s empty. Okay. Why don’t they take rebirth under the force of propelling karma?
So there’s a difference in the body and the motivation. Lesser vehicle superior.
