About this talk. In this 48-minute talk from 1984, Geshe Doga teaches the foundational practices of calm abiding meditation. He begins with breathing meditation paired with visualization, guiding students to watch the mind itself as the meditation object—noting how it appears in different forms (faces, flames, virtues, or afflictions) and developing clarity about which mental states are obstacles. He then systematically covers the practical setup: the physical posture (legs crossed, hands positioned, spine straight, eyes soft), the role of correct posture in supporting the nervous system and wind flow, and how physical discipline purifies negative actions of the body. Moving to meditation objects, he explains how to visualize Śākyamūni Buddha—choosing a comfortable size and consistent colour—or focusing on a single body part before integrating the whole form. He emphasizes the critical role of mindfulness: holding the object with three attributes—familiarity, undistracted focus, and clarity. Throughout, he compares the untamed mind to a wild elephant requiring patient discipline.

We would do the breathing meditation for a while. So while during meditation, one must try to bring the mind here in the place where you stay. So after you brought that that this that distracted mind, then try to watch it. But it has got one sort of appearance. So while analyzing the mind, perhaps you may see that the mind your mind is in the form of a face, or a table, or flames, or any object, or your guru.
Or your mind is in the form of love and compassion and such type of virtues. And also, you will also see that your mind is in the form of delusion and afflictions. So if you are aware while watching the mind that it is contaminated with affliction and delusions, then you must know that that very contaminated delusion is the main enemy at the moment and also was the main enemy in the past So while doing the breathing meditation, while you do the inhalations, exhalations, while breathing outwardly, you should visualize that the breath, that breath in the form of a black ray of light which carries all such mental afflictions. And while inhaling the breath, visualize the white ray of light coming and filling your body, coming with the blessings of Buddhas. But if at the moment, if your mind is purely in the form of love and compassion and such good form, then you might visualize while breathing in, through the blessing of Buddha and Bodhisattvas.
The the love and compassion, or any other type of mind good form is developing. So the the very meditation that we have done now has has, I mean, has changed our mind, transformed our mind to to its very pure form. So so by this, our positive actions made all sentient beings be free from their sufferings. And for that very purpose, we one may motivate that listening to the teaching. In the last sessions, we discussed the five faults or interruptions of meditation of doing the meditation well. So among them, the the the first that we talk about is the laziness.
Yeah. And we also discussed the eight antidotes or the remedies to destroy those faults. And we discussed the four antidotes can be applied to the first fault of meditation, the laziness. They are faith, aspiration,.
Effort, and then pliancy, and mental and physical suppleness. Please. So these four are the the antidotes to destroy that laziness. Yes. Before we start the meditation, we encounter laziness.
That is the main obstacle to to do the meditation, even to start the meditation. But we but while we start the actual meditation, we encounter forgetfulness. But here, it means the the forgetting the the old instruction you received from the your guru, or you got from the text, about the objects and the manner of meditation. So if one forget about about the forget the the object and the manner how to do the meditation, then one cannot do the meditation. But before, I mean, we we were confronted with such obstacle of forgetting the the instructions, First, one must have to receive the instructions.
So after receiving the instruction, then only the the forgetting the the instruction comes. So so, I mean, before we were confronted with that the obstacle of forgetfulness, we have to receive the instructions. So with regard to the post the physical posture while doing the meditation, generally, we recommend the sitting posture in the the full I mean, lotus posture or keeping the two legs crossed. But but actually, the the the physical posture that you can do, whichever is suitable for your meditation. So the the general recommendation about the physical posture as, I mean, you mentioned the keeping the two legs crossed, and then as demonstrated, joining the two hands, touching the both thumbs and keeping it.
So touching the the the point of two thumbs to your your So the And also the the both hands should be held not straight like that, but formed. Arms? Yeah. Arms.
And then our neck should be slightly bent forward and the eye should look the eye should not be completely closed and and also it should it should not be completely open. And it should look in front, toward the nose, which should be in the place straight at your level. And then the tongue should be placed touching the upper palate. And the teeth and the what do call this?
The lips. The lips should be placed normal. And the breathing from the the nostril should not be so so long and so short, but should be comfortable to you. So if we discipline even our physical form while doing the meditation, then this would this would also help to purify the negative actions of the body. If if we keep our body state, then this will help us to to to our nervous systems.
And to that nervous system, the the wind will pass through. It is difficult to translate that clearly. I think he is saying that if we keep the body straight, then our nervous system will work well, and that would help us to pass the wind in the channels lightly.
So so this would help that the passing of the wind in the channels will help us to keep our mind on the object well, because our mind and the wind move together. Our mind goes wherever the wind goes. So if the the wind passes correctly, then this would help. Just this one word.. Yeah. Just this one.
Yeah. The tongue on the palate will help to keep the mouth moist and won’t dry our throat and the saliva in our mouth. So the the right physical posture will also help us I mean, If you keep the physical posture rightly, then it looks nice to the other people too. So, generally, there there are many objects while doing this, the the some other meditations. So the if you use the the object as the the Śākyamūni Buddha image, then this would help us to to accumulate the merit tremendously.
So this would also So the one can visualize that objects in front of oneself, and one should visualize it at the straightforward eye level. So it is said that the the size of the Buddha that one visualizes as the size of one’s thumb. But, however, one can choose the size which is suitable for oneself. One may visualize as in the form one prefers. So the color with whatever I mean, it is good for you, whether in yellow or golden or whatever it may be. But once we start with any color whether that yellow, then one must continue with that color while doing the meditation.
So the his left hand in his lap, his right hand holding the bowl. So while visualizing the objects, you may visualize the either the whole form of that Śākyamūni Buddha, Or if that is impossible, then you may visualize the the any part of this body. And so that can be also used as your objects for the calm abiding meditation. So if we if you use that part, any part, then the so from part to part, and first you focus on one part and then on the others, and through this process. And at the end, one had to visualize the the whole form of the his body.
So if one could, I mean, visualize his his his whole body, all any part of his body, then that is the the the right object of calm abiding meditation. And once if if the one can’t visualize that object or one miss a little object, then that means one has forgotten the object of meditation. So so to to hold that object in a long period without forgetting what one needs to do is to keep mindfulness. So the the the mindfulness should have three attributes. The object should be an object which is familiar to you and the manner it hold the object should not be Should not be distracted to any others anything else and to hold the object with clarity and vividness.
So one may regard one’s own mind as an untamed elephant. Since one has to tame the mind and keep it on the chosen object.
