About this talk. Geshe Doga addresses the root cause of human suffering: the uncontrolled mind. In this 47-minute teaching, he builds a logical foundation—if our actions stem from our mind, and our mind determines our circumstances, then controlling the mind is paramount. He explains why we fail to regulate our behaviour: we misidentify the sources of our problems, blaming others or external events rather than recognizing that our own mental habits generate suffering for ourselves and others. The core instruction unfolds through practical examples—how to interrupt anger by reflecting deeply on its causes, how understanding the law of cause and effect builds forgiveness, and how responding to harm with compassion rather than retaliation benefits both parties. Geshe Doga emphasizes that meditation is essential; mere hearing of teachings is insufficient without contemplative practice. An audience questioner raises internal and external conditions for dharma practice, and Geshe stresses the primacy of a discerning mind that can judge right from wrong. Accessible to newcomers and serious practitioners alike.

So we should, I mean, analyze our mind that that that that after following any the diff the kind of mind, any kind of mind, what come what comes next? All like this. So because we are always, I mean, putting the the every causes of our suffering to others, I mean, other people or from such things and external things. This experience could know could know even if you think upon your past experience, like like thinking on the the the such and such past mode of mind has has given me trouble or given me happiness. So if you think about the past experience of your mind, then you would you would prevent this same in the future.
So the one’s own mind should be hold by one’s self and because it can’t be it cannot it cannot be cannot be maintained by others. So so how to maintain maintain one’s own mind is that we are, I mean, normally going after the what type of mind which influence us. So, like, when when we have when we when such bad motive arises within ourselves, we we are not trying even not trying to control that mind. And and instead, we think that that that bad mind and oneself as as as same entity and do and what that mind influence us to do. So that kind of bad heart is produced by oneself and is not produced by other beings.
So so and and also it is not it is not caused by other beings. So if we come to know that that that cruel heart is produced by oneself and it is not caused by some other being, then surely, you would know how to, I mean, bring it down. So today, we talk about the the the type of our mind that we generally produce and also the the way of or the function of our mind and like this. Actually, we must have to know the the the relationship between our mind and the the our the action of our body speech and the the mind with the the the self. So is the the fact with we all that the that the that the the bad behavior of our body, mind, and speech gives the suffering to oneself and also the other.
But still but still we are not in control not we are we can’t control our behavior. The main reasons for for we all to all to not able to control our behavior, such behavior is that the that we that we can’t recognize the the right causes of that behaviors. So if we once know the the causes of every our actions of our behavior, then we would, to some extent, control the behavior. So as he has talked before, we have talked before, so if when we go, I mean, deeply upon the the cause the every causes of our our actions, then we come to know that the root of every of our action is the is the our mind. So the so the our mind, our behavior, and our mind are are related to each other.
And as said before, the the every action is root from the our mind. So once you know that the the mind is the the basic I mean, the root of all our activity, our behavior, then then you would, I mean, know the how important to to to control our mind. So so we need to know the the the nature of mind and also the the the advantage side of mind and also the the shortcoming sides of mind. So as we do not know about that shortcoming side of our mind, then we we think that the the whatever we do is good, and we hardly see the the wrongs I mean, the the wrong sides of our actions. So this is, I mean, because of not seeing the the defects of our mind.
So if you invest in one’s own mind, then you could do the right dharma even sitting in one place, sitting in one place, and also do the right dharma just sitting in one place. So as a least example, if I give, if while going out, if we had a very strong we produce a very strong anger, then after, I mean, then after coming back to one’s house and then if you try to think upon the the the causes of that strong anger deeply, then the then you surely, I mean, decrease that state of your anger. So this is just comes just matter of your thinking. So if you have any doubt, any questions, you can ask. He’s saying, could one’s mind be affected by the negative thoughts, negative mind of somebody close to oneself, a friend, a family member?
Mhmm. Could some could one’s mind be affected by somebody else’s negative mind? It causes us. But still, if if if you if you think very deeply, then that won’t matter. Suppose if you think like that the it is not that person of your relative or that person doing bad to you, but it is due to his heart and due to that person’s that uncontrollable mind which which, I mean, which causes him to do that negative things.
For example, if a a mother has a children who has a very cruel mind, then when mother give him any food, instead of, I mean, showing, I mean, likeness to his mother, if he bring a knife to kill her, kill the mother, still that mother won’t, I mean, feel. So she won’t be angry of that action of her. Why? I mean, that that if that boy that that her son is, I mean, mind crazy. So so this is because that, I mean, the mother would know that it is it is the her son’s crazy mind which causes him to do the actions.
Our mind could also be be progress by, I mean, forbearing those ex I mean, the outer negative things. And also if if instead of, I mean, doing our doing bad to that other people and who is harming us. If we show some love or some if we help to that instead if you help that persons, then possibly he will do he will respond in realize his action and respond in same way. And also to this way, we could also progress our mind. Generally, in this I mean, if someone say harsh words to one, then if one doesn’t, I mean, respond in the same way, then then possibly, I mean, the the worldly people will think some other way.
But from the dharma point of view, I mean, is the the right way, the not responding the harsh word as a harsh word. And and this would, I mean, helps to both. Yeah. That is necessary. And if how much one have a listen to Dharma, that much one could contemplate on that meaning.
And and also that much one could meditate on the Dharma point. The listening Dharma is, I mean, worthwhile. But still, if you don’t meditate upon that that that the subject that one know, then the one come one couldn’t realize the the the how much of the power the Dharma has got. Because if you just listen to Dharma and not meditate on it, then then to this that listening, you would know you just realized that the the the Dharma is a benefit in your life. But still, when someone else says it is, I mean, useless, then the your mind will change.
But if you meditate on that, what you have listened to, then your mind won’t change and your practice will go on and continue. There are many I mean, such instant that the the once someone has, I mean, forsake his own life for the Dharma. This, I mean, such a strong wishes even to for forsake one’s own body is because of experience that the the essence of Dharma through meditating on the teachings. So the meditation is the the most important thing. Geshe-la did not elaborate the internal qualities or endowments for practicing Dharma or for being able to, could Geshe-la say something about the internal No.
Endowments. Yes. Mainly, I mean, the taming of to bring down our to pacify our mind in the sense that the the the eliminating those all those defilements which which we produce all the times. No. I I was asking about the you you talked Geshe la talked about the external conditions for practicing Dharma Yeah.
And the internal conditions. And if even even if some of the external were lacking, the internal conditions were more important. What what what are what are the internal conditions? The main internal condition condition is the our mind should be pure. Our mind should should know should know how to discern the things, the right or wrong.
Also the also the having the intention or the aspiration to to engage in the dharma. So the so the wisdom that that differentiate the right and wrong thing is the very important. So that, I mean, the whatever other says, the one could, I mean, judge the the the the right and wrongs. Otherwise, I mean, one couldn’t do so. This is, I mean, same with those, I mean, who have who have studied well in this school.
For them, I mean, whatever I’m teaching you, we we give them learn or understand very easily. This is because of their, I mean, developed wisdom. And also, the many of I mean, such new Dharma, I mean, practitioners, they some some of them, they used to say that the the what you get the teaching is is absolutely right. But I found difficult in putting that into practice. But what I mean, they’re saying that’s right is that they are good wisdoms.
They know that the what is that what he gives teaching is right. So this is because of their wisdom. Say it in somebody who hurts you, is it? No. Someone you know has been hurt.
Yeah. And they’re gonna be hurt forever. Yeah. Oh, no. I mean, the that other has done a very great hurt on him, so it’s very difficult to bring down that anger.
But still, when we think deeply and and from part of this dharma, then we know that the the same actions is done to that persons by himself, before him, and that is the main causes. So the main causes of having such unfortunate this time is done by himself. So thinking to this, we could bring down that anger. So it is like thinking of the the law of cause and effect. The whenever someone else, I mean, gives you trouble or someone else hurt you.
So if you think like in the same way that you did to him before he made the past life or like this, you think only that the process of the law of cause and effect, then this would help you to to bring down that anger. So so if we had a deep understanding of this law of cause and effect, then this would help us to to to forgive others and bear the this suffering that we have. So as he has given the the talk before, so if you try to think of those the general things of the the function of our mind and this what comes from those different type of mind, then this would help you. And also the Dharma is not I mean, it’s not always something which helps you in a very long time, in the next lifetime. It also helps you in this life too if you put that in the practice.
And also some things that the the the result of the during this the practice of Buddhism is very is very long, but it is not so. The result could be, I mean, come even in this very very soon in this life. So as we talked before, the the the right Dharma is to to change your one’s own mind or like this. So this would, I mean, brings you a happy life even in this we’ll stop here.
