About this talk. In this 47-minute teaching, Kyabje Rinpoche opens with Tsongkhapa’s teaching: unless we see the profound faults of saṃsāra, we remain trapped by its marvels and attractions. He then teaches the 12 Links of Dependent Origination—the mechanism that binds us in cycles of rebirth—focusing on how basic ignorance (the misconception of an independent self) drives all karma. This ignorance breeds a false sense of “I,” which creates possessiveness, attachment to friends, aversion to enemies, and destructive actions. Yet even our skillful acts—prostrations, meditation, generosity—spring from this same root ignorance at a deeper level. Karma, impermanent by nature, imprints consciousness and propels rebirth. A closing Q&A teaches: though habituation conditions us, understanding the faults of an action can become the antidote. For serious Buddhist practitioners.

Dharmakīrti. Tsongkhapa in reverse says that if we do not see the faults of cyclic existence, we will see the marvels of cyclic existence. And seeing the marvels of cyclic existence, we will be attached to cyclic existence. And out of that attachment, by the power of that attachment, we will remain forever in cyclic existence. And there will be no determination to arise out of it.
If we develop renunciation, we can quickly develop great compassion. If we do not develop renunciation, then there’s no way that we can develop compassion. Once having developed great compassion, having developed quickly great compassion, can go on to develop the awakening heart and quickly travel the great vehicle. By developing renunciation we can weaken and in dependence upon that gain an understanding of selflessness of emptiness and quickly abandon cyclic existence and thereby achieve liberation. So the achievement of liberation is dependent on the development of renunciation.
The determination to arise, renunciation is the foundation of both the vehicles. It is the foundation for all the excellent qualities of the greater vehicle and also the lesser vehicle. The quality of our individual world is determined by our individual karma, our actions. Depending upon the quality of our actions, this will have, this will determine the quality of our reality, of our world. That whatsoever it might be, it’s the environment, the place that we live in, our clothes, our companions, the condition of our body, the quality of our food.
All arises in dependence upon the individual actions that we’ve created. In dependence upon constructive types of actions, we will have very positive desirable food, clothing, environment, companions, etc. And in dependence upon destructive types of actions, we will have the opposite. We will experience the opposite effect. So, you know, the Buddha, he’s he talked about Karma.
That’s Karma, if we translate it, translate it, actions. What is this Karma? What are actions? Karma is activities. It’s like work.
We are the agent. We are the doer, and we do different activities. We do activities by means of we do verbal activities, physical activities, and mental activities. These are all karma that depending upon sometimes our physical activities are constructive, sometimes they’re destructive, sometimes our verbal activities are constructive, sometimes destructive. Sometimes our mental activities are constructive, sometimes destructive.
Therefore, we create constructive karma, destructive karma. We are agents enacting various actions of body, speech, and mind. This is what we mean by karma. Just these actions of our body, speech, and mind which are either constructive or destructive. There’s nothing more that’s meant by that.
This is what we are to understand when we talk about karma or actions, these various activities that we do. Then, these three types of activities, physical, verbal, and mental are initiated out of a motivation. Without motivation, there is no action. The the teaching on the 12 links of dependent origination is set out in terms of ordinary person. That is someone who is circling, continually circling within cyclic existence.
And by ordinary person we we mean someone who has not had, does not have a direct realization of emptiness. Someone who has achieved a direct realization of emptiness is about to be freed from the circle of cyclic existence, is no longer being propelled within cyclic existence is about to be freed from it. So when we talk about the cyclic the 12 links of dependent origination, we’re talking about in terms of a person who has not had direct realization of emptiness. So, for an individual who has not realized emptiness directly, performs various types of physical, verbal, and mental actions. And these actions are initiated by a motivation.
And for this individual, the root, the foundation of their motivation is ignorance. Ignorance in the sense of grasping at the self of persons, or another way to term this is that the conception conception of of the the true true existence existence of of a the self of persons, the conception of the true existence and this is also termed view of the transitory, view of the transitory collection. Conception of the true existence of of the the self self of of a person is termed the view of the transitory collection. Out of this found motivation of ignorance, one creates various types of actions. Whatever the quality of the action, it is still motivated by ignorance.
So, this is, this is the, the first of these 12 links of dependent origination. The basic ignorance. This is the it is the creator of actions. Whether action be skillful or unskillful, and it is grasping at the self of persons, which is the propeller, which acts as the initiating propellant of cyclic existence and the 12 links of dependent origination. Ignorance functions to obscure the final nature of reality.
The final nature of reality is emptiness. It is the factor of ignorance obscures the individual from seeing that final nature of reality. So, is the first of the 12 links of dependent origination is basic ignorance. And the second of the 12 links is karmic formations. That is the creation of actions.
How does ignorance act, how does ignorance bring about the creation of action or karma? The way ignorance is functioning is that it takes as its object of observation the nominally existent I within one’s own continuum, you know, the eye. We have an eye which goes, which does various actions, does things. This I which is being observed is dependent upon the aggregate. It arises in reliance upon aggregates.
But, taking that ignorance, taking that I as the object of observation goes on to conceive of that I to not depend, not to depend upon any other factor. That it, it conceives of that I to exist independently under its own control. This, this is a distorted awareness. It misconceives a reliably existent I as to be, or a dependently existent I to be independently existing. So out of this misconception, misconceiving the nature of the I, now conceiving it to exist independently, this strong sense of a powerful sense of independent existent eye arises in the mind.
Out of this, out of the power of this arises mine. My friend, my possessions, room, my table, my mother, my father, my sister, my brother, my, my, mine, mine. Out of this strong sense of mine comes a sense of possessiveness and attachment. Additionally, out of the sense of mine, we begin to conceive of my enemy.
Those people we don’t like, we now conceive of as my enemy, or my relatives’ enemies, or my parents’ enemies, or my friends’ enemies. And toward them, we develop anger. Under the influence of attachment, begin to engage in various actions such as stealing, sexual improprieties, lying, saying harsh words, have harmful intentions. And additionally, out of the, under the influence of anger, again engaging in various types of destructive actions such as killing, lying, fighting, all the various unskillful types, various other types of unskillful actions arising under the influence of anger. So, all of these various types of unskillful actions which arise under the influence of attachment, anger, and confusion constitute the second of these 12 links of dependent origination karmic formations.
But additionally, from time to time we also enact skillful actions. I don’t know, for example, we under this strong influence of a sense of I that we conceive of I prostrate, I make prostrations, I do meditation, I practice generosity, I make various types of offering. And again, this even these skillful actions are motivated by ignorance. So there are these various qualities of activities we do engage in under the influence of attachment and anger, etcetera. We engage in various destructive types of activities.
Even but again, we do various types of skillful activities, constructive activities physically, verbally, and mentally which have happiness as a result such as happy types of migration. There are qualities of our actions in terms of the constructive or destructive. Qualities of our actions, both constructive and destructive, are both both constitute the second link of dependent origination karmic formations, which simply can mean karma or action. The karma is impermanent. Impermanent.
It’s not everlasting. It is momentarily arising and disintegrating. Karma, having created an action, it leaves a latency upon the consciousness. You know, there is a predisposition or an impression made upon the consciousness having created the action. So this represents the third link of the 12 links of dependent origination.
The consciousness which has been impressed by the latencies of actions or karma. The consciousness which has been, which has been impressed by the latencies of Karma. It’s the third link. So we’ll stop the teaching there for now if you have some questions. So it’s not a waste of time because it will bring you happiness within cyclic existence.
So, are two factors in our motivation. There’s the distant, the distant factor and the immediate factor. The distant factor, for example, if we basic illustration is you think, I’m going to do prostrations. And the immediate intention is skillful, to do prostrations. That is a skillful intention, and which will bring about a skillful action.
The distant because there is a sense of I am going to do this, there is a distant motivation of ignorance. So, is both a combination of ignorance and a skillful intention which will bring about a skillful action. For example, in dependence upon the skillful action created, out of that one could attain in the future a human life. How do we have a choice? So it’s a combination of the two.
One can act according to one’s choice, but also this choice is made in conjunction with the previous latencies of past action under that influence. So, you know, if one were completely habituated to stealing for example, then one would have little choice in acting out stealing. But if one, if one were shown the faults of stealing, began to understand the faults of stealing, then one could develop the, could develop the power of choice to cease stealing even though one has been habituated to it, through understanding of the fault. The understanding of the fault of stealing could act as an antidote to this disposition. This predispose this predisposition to continue to steal.
It’s it’s like a, you know, if you roll a piece of paper very tightly into a tube and then you pull it out it will immediately return back and let go it will return to its tube. The shape of the two. Likewise, to, you know, we have various habituations that which causes to be predisposed to liking, for example, engaging in skillful types of actions. Other people have habituated to stealing of it, but we can also be habituated to attachment, to killing, killing, you know, these various states of mind. This is an extremely great fault or defect.
That is habituation to unskillful action. So you know, when you plant a seed in the ground and
