About this talk. In this 47-minute teaching, Kyabje Rinpoche introduces the Wheel of Life through its legendary origin: the Buddha’s advice to send a sacred painting between kings, and how the artist traced the Buddha’s form through cloth because his light was too bright to paint directly. Rinpoche walks through the wheel’s symbolism—Yama holding all six realms under karma—and systematically explains the twelve links of dependent origination. He covers ignorance (a blind person), karmic formations (a potter), consciousness (a monkey), and name-form, showing how these links depict the cyclic nature of saṃsāra and the path to liberation. The teaching presents two frameworks for understanding the links to refute misconceptions about past and future rebirths.

The sentient beings I must practice in order to eliminate all my various faults and bring the consummation of all my excellent qualities. Having eliminated all my various faults and brought the consummation all my excellent qualities, then out of compassion and love, I will be able to teach the Dharma to others and thereby able to lead them to complete happiness. And in order to achieve that end, I must train well and practice in a great vehicle and cultivate such motivation for the next three minutes. According to a verse by Ārya Maitreya in which he says there are two ways in which we can contemplate the 12 links of dependent origination. As was mentioned, can the 12 links of dependent origination describe both the process whereby we continue to circle in cyclic existence, and the means by which we can attain liberation.
So there is the method of contemplating in terms of the serial cause and effect relationship of the 12 links and then there is the reverse order of describing arises from this, and this arises from that, and that arises from this. So there is the manner in which one enters into cyclic existence and the manner in which one disengages from cyclic existence. So I think it be perhaps more readily understandable if we use these charts. So this would this description is as taught by the Buddha. So give a short account of how this came about.
So this occurred in ancient India and it came about that there was one tribe of people who were traveling to another area and they were going there for the purpose of carrying on trading. And when they went to that area, they first went to present themselves to the king of that area. And this king’s name was Indrabodhi. And Indra Bodhi asked these your country, do you have a king? And they said that we have a king and his name name is So the king’s the king’s name was which means king.
Kinds of rare articles do you have in your in your country? We have we have some rare jewels in our country. So the asking what was extremely rare in your country, they answered that jewels are extremely rare in our country. And so, the King Indrabodhi sent the King Sujaninpo a treasure trove So upon receiving upon receiving this treasure trove full of rare jewels, King Sujaninpo asked the bringer of the gift, what is rare in your country? And they said clothes are very rare in our country.
And he so therefore, King Sujaninbo sent back trunkloads full of beautiful clothing to King Indrapodi. And they became great friends. And so, Indra Bodhi was thinking, what can I send my good friend Sujaninbo now? And he sent them a suit of armor, which was accompanied by various weapons. And so, Indrabodhi wanted to send a return gift, but he couldn’t think of anything to send.
So, he asked one of, he asked his ministers, what can I send King Sujaninbo? And one of the ministers says, why don’t you ask the Buddha? And the Buddha advised him that he send what became known as the Wheel of Life. That he sent a painting in which was portrayed the Buddha and the various mechanisms depicting the 12 links of Dependent Origination and various realms. He suggested he send such a painting.
So at that time, there was no such painting in existence. And so when when it came time to actually make the painting and in the corner you notice there is a Buddha in the upper right hand corner. In order to when they tried to paint the Buddha that the artist could not look at the because he was shining with light. He was so illuminated like the sun that he was couldn’t look at him directly. So the artist couldn’t paint him like that.
Oh. So the the Buddha the Buddha sent that sent for some very coarse thick cloth. So they put the cloth up and and they traced out the the impression of the Buddha that was shining through the cloth in order to paint the Buddha. So the painting So the the painting was prepared and then was was sealed in various types of vessels, copper and gold vessels, and was sent as long distance and upon receiving it, it was opened and the painting was displayed and various offerings were made to the painting. And the king, Sujaninbo, So the receiver of this gift was Sujaninbo.
He received it, and upon receiving it, it was displayed, made various offerings to it, and he, the King studied it, and as by the force of having studied the painting, he developed renunciation and attained a direct realization of emptiness and became a superior. And, but also aside from the King, the various other students who studied this painting achieved great realization. Some achieved various paths and grounds and realization of emptiness, others the awakening heart. So in by contemplating what is presented here, one can one can develop renunciation, then out of that will come realization of emptiness and the attainment of liberation.
Being the entire six realms are being held by Yama. That is to say everything which is going on here is under control of Karma. And it is and yeah, in the personification of Karma is Yama who is like the Lord of the six realms. So he’s grasping the entire entirety of cyclic existence in his mouth within his claws. So around the outer concentric, the outer circle is depicted the 12 links of dependent origination.
And beginning with the very most upper illustration to the right, you see a blind person walking along with a stick. This blind person is without eyes. They are obscured from seeing the path obscured from seeing what’s around them. And this is the depiction as was mentioned this morning, the first of the 12 links of dependent origination, basic ignorance. Just as this person is obscured from seeing the surrounding area and the path.
Likewise, the two types of ignorance, the ignorance which is the grasping at the self of phenomena and the ignorance which is the grasping for the self of persons, obscures one from seeing the final nature of reality which is emptiness. There are these two factors of ignorance and the wisdom understanding emptiness. These are as if opposite. That is to say, these two are incompatible. When the I is being observed by ignorance, there appears to exist a truly existent self.
When the I is being observed by the wisdom, understanding, selflessness, a truly existent self does not appear. So therefore, two factors are mutually incompatible by the means of wisdom, understanding, emptiness, ignorance can be eliminated. And the second link of dependent origination was karmic formations and this is depicted by a potter forming various pots and articles such as cups, etcetera. That this is the type of work and out of this work various objects are being formed. Influence of ignorance as a motivating force, actions are engaged in.
Karma is being created both unskillful and skillful types of karma. Out of the influence of afflictive emotions, unskillful types of karma are created. Under the influence of positive states such as faith, generosity, etcetera, then skillful states of karma are created. But, they all have as their motivating force ignorance and also neutral types of karma also created and motivated by ignorance. So, just out of one’s karma, various all the various objects arise whether it be such things as food, clothing, the entirety of one’s realm arises dependent upon karma.
These are formed out of karma. And likewise likewise here, out of the action of the potter, various objects are being formed such as pots, vases. So, activity of the potter, various objects are being formed. As we mentioned, karma is a momentary phenomenon. It’s being, it arises and disintegrates momentarily.
It is not permanent. And the Karma as a potential is then impressed upon the consciousness as forms a latency which is impressed upon the consciousness. The consciousness is always residing with us. It has come with us from previous life. It is with us now and it will continue with us.
And along with it are these potencies or latencies which have been impressed upon the consciousness. So we can, you know, make an analogy between the mind and the piece of paper, and the latencies are like the printing upon the piece of paper. The latencies are printed or impressed upon the mind, just as we print on paper. So, the mind does not remain in one place for long. It’s constantly moving here and there to various objects.
It’s like an unruly monkey who is constantly climbing about going here and there. And so therefore, the mind is illustrated as a monkey in this third picture. So the third link of dependent origination is consciousness, but consciousness which has been impressed with the latencies. Now we come to the fourth link, which is termed name and form. In proceeding through the 12 links of dependent origination, there are actually two ways that one can proceed in describing the 12 links.
There is the procedure in which the 12 links are simply taken in order as they’re presented, occurring over, and as if they were to occur over a single lifetime. But there is another mode of presenting order of the 12 Links of Dependent Origination which is set forth in order to refute the two types of distorted views. One, distorted view holds that previous lives, previous rebirths do not exist. That this is the only life which exists and it’s just like a flower. That flower grows and then dies and that’s the end of it.
So, there is no previous rebirth. And, the other distorted view is the one which holds that there is no future rebirth. That is to say that we are like a flame and once the flame goes out, the continuum, the continuity of the light is severed and nothing goes forward. So, there is another way in which the 12 links are presented in order to specifically refute these two distorted views. So there are two ways of proceeding in describing the 12 links.
So, in order to refute the distorted view which discounts the existence of previous rebirths, there is the procedure in which the 12 links are described in terms of three causes and four results. Terms of refuting the, a means of refuting the, discounting the existence of previous lives, that we take our body which which we exist within this present life has as its cause three causes which existed in a previous life. And these three causes are as we’ve been discussed thus far. There is the basic motivation of ignorance, due to which we perform various actions create karma whether in our case having achieved a human type of life embodiment, then it was perhaps we made offerings to the Three Jewels. We made prostrations.
We did meditation. These various actions impressed, made impressions of latencies upon the consciousness. So those acted as the three causes for the achievement of our present embodiment. These three causes were contained in a previous life. So in in our case, due to these three causes having been created in a previous existence, the consciousness due to the ripening of the latencies of the actions created, entered into the union of the sperm and ovum of our present parents of this life and thereby we took a human type of rebirth.
So, as a result of these three causes of previous life, consciousness through the force of karma enters into the union of the sperm and egg of our present parents of this life and we take rebirth as a human. And this combination of sperm and egg will eventually develop into our present body. At this point, it’s simply an undifferentiated mass. It slowly develops has the consistency of yogurt. Then slowly the various limbs begin to form.
It actually becomes identifiable as a human embryo all the various sense organs are developed. This is termed this combination of the consciousness and this form point is called name and form. The reason it’s called the name aspect is that it is labeled onto the four aggregates of feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousnesses. These are fully developed. So, that is to say they are completely, the aggregates are fully developed.
So they are properly, I say why they are called name. Because they are, all the properties of these aggregates are present at that particular time. So, they are suitable to be named that. They’re suitable to be named form. Not suitable to name feeling perception.
They’re suitable to have those names. But at this point, because at the rebirth, at the conception, it’s not an actual aggregate of form. It’s still to be developed. It’s
