About this talk. In this 45-minute teaching, Kyabje Rinpoche traces the relationship between the 37-deity and 62-deity forms of the Vajrayoginī mandala, showing how they represent the same practice at different levels of expansion. He begins with inner offering—the visualization of the deity in union with the male consort—which generates the inseparable bliss and emptiness that anchors the entire practice. He explains how the four joys develop in mother tantra, ascending through the chakras from navel to crown, and how from this realized bliss-emptiness the 37 Vajrayoginis manifest. He breaks down the mandala structure: the 24 body-speech-mind deities, each with consort, become 48; adding the eight sense-gate deities, four heart-channel deities, and central pair yields 62. He covers the ninth yoga of verbal recitation—blessing and using the mala, the correct finger positions with emphasis on the power finger to conquer the deity—and explains why left-side activity symbolizes wisdom. For serious practitioners who have received Vajrayoginī initiation.

Please rejoice and through this making offering of this wisdom knowledge initiation. And so if a one male or female practitioner, visualized one Sarva Buddha Yoginī and then with the Khatvanga presenting the Heruka male deity. If one is a male practitioner, then imagine that, I mean, we have visualized oneself as the Vajrayoginī, and during this stage, imagine that one’s been transformed, or one’s sex, with the, as one is generating Vajrayoginī, then imagine that one is in the form of, converted into the Heruka, and being in embrace with the Vajrayoginī. So to be in this, making that offering with the consort of embracing the male and the female deities. First one should be done with the along with the recitation of the mantra which has been in the self-generation sādhana.
And by the mantra from the secret places from the white bodhicitta descends comes a white drop and so so and so forth. Gradually with the mothers and then being with the mothers, with embracing each other, and through this by being in the equipoise, with embracing with it, being in concert, or holding with the female deity, and then through this one attains the wisdom of bliss, which recognizes the empty, and through this, one attains the through this, not one attains. Through this, and one being on a meditative stabilization of non dual, bliss and empty. So this has been set for the two types of inner offerings here, secret offerings, being reciting the mantras of the male and the female. So if one resides with a male one, then one doesn’t need the lower one which is female.
So it’s like alternative, which means if one does the mother’s one then one doesn’t need to do the father’s recitation of mantra. During that stage, was the experiencing of the four joys and the way of developing joy, experiencing joy is in two types. The upper, like from lower descendants joy and generating experiencing the joy and the upper upwards, which means joy descends downwards from the crown head down towards and or and one upwards, which means starting from the navel and tails upwards to one’s heart and then towards yeah. Towards one throat and then crown and then comes down. So so so probably here is could be but I’m not sure about whether it’s upwards, but likely it comes from the Yes, it’s the Mata Tantra system.
It comes starting from navel, and then the joy generates from upwards, from the heart, throat, and crown, and then comes down. It’s been not sure because these are the four joys developing or experiencing of four joys are the special features of the mother tantra. It is not in the father tantra. So the it’s the generation of that joy or bliss is starting from the the heart. It said it is because because the the the mother’s red drop is located at the at the navel, and so due to that, and the father’s, the white drop location is at the crown head.
So due to that, would likely to be generation of the joy or bliss starting from the navel. And being on this meditative stabilization on the bliss and emptiness, inseparable bliss and emptiness, and through this, recognizing the whole entire world systems and inhabitants being lacking of inherent existence, knowing but through this and being on yeah. And through the meditative stabilization, knowing all the entire world systems and inhabitants being the lacking inherent existence and they are empty. So due to this, through this one makes the offering of suchness. So, during the itself, during the making of the sacred offerings here, by being in the male and female deities embracing each other, symbolizing the gathering of the wisdom and method.
And then by blessing this, first one visualize the four syllables at the four places. And through this generates the and through this, by visualizing or establishing the letters, focal syllables in the four places. And through this, from there, distills or descends the bliss and the nature, and by receiving that nature, one develops a innate bliss, spontaneous bliss or innate bliss. And that bliss just becomes inseparable one with the emptiness, and that forms the wisdom realized wisdom of indivisible bliss and emptiness. And so, for example, like the so the way of generating is that by being concert with being concert in a con embracing with the female deity.
And then the white bodhicitta, for the crown, travels passes through the central channel, and by the descendant of that one develops spontaneous bliss. And then being being one or mixing up with the and after that, being in the concert and mixing with the So, yes, by the passing of the white bodhicitta through the channel, and by this it produces the bliss of the physical bliss or joys, and that is the innate bliss or joy, bliss. And then that becomes, that causes one’s to experience the bliss or joy at one’s, bliss at one’s mind. And due to that, that mind realizes the emptiness, and becoming that it forms the wisdom of indivisible bliss and emptiness. And that forms into 32, 37, 37 phenomenas or of the orientated in it says 37 practices of orientated in orientated enlightened enlightenment or a Changchup Sodin in Tibetan.
So which the practice of this has been like for perfect abandonment and so on and so forth. So and these are all in the nature of wisdom and that and through these forms, the old 37 forms into the 62 deities of the are becoming the nature of the 62 deities of the Heruka mandala. Then, imagine that one has the vision of those deities, deities appear in the mirror. And this is the system of Tipuva. And Luipa systems, it’s been set off.
So this this practice visualization has been set during the Chöd offering according to the Tipupa system and lubuva which comes after the and this practice is done after the Chöd offering or during after the practice of the offering of suchness. And so so as so I think this practice is done I mean I mean, so this one is done same in the this practice is done same in the Vajrayoginī. So here in the Vajrayoginī practices, so it’s not I I haven’t seen any clear explanation or any text clear explanation on this practice in any text. So I think it has been done the same here, a lot the that during the secret offerings and and through that the the wisdom of nondual bliss and emptiness or inseparable bliss and emptiness, and that realizes the suchness and forms into the 37 practices of Bodhisattva practice mainly, which I said was 37 orientated enlightenment practices. Is And they’re 37.
And, yeah, so as I said before, like, they practice all, like, for perfect abandonment, for perfect abandonment and so forth. I’m sure it’s very you have studied that. And and by so that 37 practice 37 forms into the 37 Vajrayoginī, and if they are they are in the nature of they are in the nature of wisdom and appears clearly like one appears. Imagine that they appear in a mirror. So by generating that 37 practices of Bodhisattva practices are formed into 37 Vajrayoginis or in the nature of wisdom.
And that 37 are the eight deities of the mind and eight bodies each of the eight deities each of the bodies, spirit and mind, and eight deities of the eight doors of the eight sense powers, and the four deities of the four deities of the four heart channels, and then the central is the yeah, and then in the indestructible drop, which is the one. And all the 32, 62 deities of the Heruka are included or presented within the 37, So the condensation or presenting of all the 62 deities of Heruka within these 37 deities is being done in this way, that there are 24 deities of the body, speech, and mind. And by holding a Khatvanga, each holding a Khatvanga, which symbolizes yeah, consort, father consort, so it becomes two twenty four x 48 deities. And then the eight deities of the eight hours and door of the eight sense power, adding it becomes 56. And then the four deities of the four cardinal directions, four heart channel becomes 60.
And at the center and on the indestructible drop are the consort of main father and mother deity, principal deity becomes two. So by summing it up, it becomes 62 deities, which are the 62 deities of the Heruka Mandala. So if one can, then I want you to visualize all the 37 along with the father consort. And through this, they are being in the yeah, so visualize all the 37 deities along with the consort of the male deity, a male deity, and being in embrace or being in consort. If one can, one should do this meditation, visualization.
62. So, Geshe-la, repeat the number? Yes. The 24 deities of the body, speech and mind, eight twenty four. So, and holding a Khatvanga each, which becomes 24 Khatvangas, are the father concept.
So two twenty four is 48. Plus the eight of the eight door of the eight sense power. So it becomes eight is 56 plus the deities of the four cardinal directions, four heart channel is four, becomes 60. And at the indestructible drop at the center with our main father and consort, so two deities becomes 62. Is it clear now?
So if one is a male practitioner, and as we just said before, then one transforms into the male form, into the Heruka deity, and after the end of this session, then one recites the mantra, recites the words that again again turn back into the aspects of Vajrayoginī. 37 deities are the eight deities of the eight, body, speech and mind. So eight deities of the body, eight deities of the speech and eight body, speech and eight deities which is 24 plus the eight deities situated at the eight doors of the eight sense power. So it becomes all right? Thirty thirty two.
And the four deities are the four cardinal. It’s been said that the four channels of the heart, which are the four. Then inside is the indestructible main deity, so it becomes 37. And then after that one does, one makes the offering called, the very important offering called the mantra offering the mantra homage or mantra praise, reciting the praise of praise, right praise. And it’s been said very important.
And due to that so when one does this, first emanates the offering goddesses from one’s heart then reciting the the verses of of the no. It’s not done for the father. It’s done for the mother female deity, Vajrayoginī. And it’s called the there is a prayer the praise text called the the eight eight verses praise, called eight eight verses praise, and which has very, very intense meaning profound meaning. And if one can does this do if one can is able to do this, then it’s very effective to removing the obstacles and so forth.
So so we don’t have a time to go through the explanation of the eight verses of the prayer. So but and if one if whenever we get the time, we’ll go through that in the near future. And so if you are able to do that, the prayers of the eight verses praise, continue with it. So by reciting that performing that praise of the eight verses praise, by reciting it’s been said that it has included both the mantra offering mantra offering and the mantra praise. We have been set forth to four types of offerings, the external, which is the vase initiation one.
So external, internal, secret, and the suchness. Some of those for the main the critical or the main or the the main or the last two, the secret offering and the suchness. Now, we tend to do the ninth yoga, which is yoga of verbal and mental recitation. So the yoga of verbal and mental recitation and now the first yoga of verbal recitation is first, if one can, then it’s good to have the best is to have the mala made out of the human bone. And if not, then I want to try to get the mala made out of the wood called the Bodhi wood, from the tree, actually.
And then it’s good to have the number of number 111. So and as the hearer, the explanation of this verbal recitation is done to according with the the in the short version of the of the practices. So but but in But it is stated in the Sakya Pandita that it has set forth the blessings of the blessing the mala. So it’s been set forth. The way of blessing is by reciting the mantra seven times, then one blow it blow towards the on the on the mala.
So by facing towards the deities towards the deities and then recite the mantra just as soon as you recite it. And by reciting that mantra several times and then blow it on once Excuse me? I’ll come up with it tomorrow. Yeah. I have one text with me with same copies.
So yeah, so as it is the practice of Chakrasamvara Tantra, Here, main importance of the wisdom. They are like the mother tantra, the wisdom is practices mainly. Yeah, so due to that, the activity of the left part of the body, or should I say left hand, is more important, considered important to symbolize the wisdom that realizing emptiness, that seeing the emptiness nature of all phenomena. They are that they lack inherent existence. And so due to that the due to that the left hand activity is considered more important.
It is because that so they’ve been formed that all the phenomenas, the basis, paths, results, Buddhas, Buddhas, the conventional truths and so forth has been formed or being formed through the through through the emptiness or by lacking inherent existence. So due to that, the left left hand or the left activity is considered important than the right one in these schools. And and so so it is said, well, if there all the phenomena does not do not lack inherent existence, then that becomes truly existent. And then through this, then if there is a true existence, then we could uproot all this. There are no laws, action, and their result, and so forth.
So here it means that everything has been formed through or by lacking inherent existence. So just to symbolize the wisdom of realizing emptiness, the left arm or activities are important than the right. So everything, the drinking and eating and so forth is done. And walking also starts with the left leg steps, so everything is done. Yeah.
So so so first one, bless the mala, and then the recitation. So say if we if one does the retreat and he so during the retreat, the retreat has been set for the purpose of doing retreat is to conquer or capture one’s meditational or personal deity. So to do that, the way of reciting mantra and the pulling the beads, there are four types with the index finger, middle and ring finger, and the last one. The but doing with the first one is the attainment of it symbolizes the peace. As they are the four peace, increase, power, and wrathful.
So the first one is peace, second one is increase, third ring finger is power, and the last one is wrathful. So as here is to capture or conquer one’s meditational deity, it should be done with the last one, with the ring finger, which is power. So but when you do starting of the the pulling the mantra, you should try with the the ring finger first few times. It is a bit hard to do that. Okay.
But try it a few times, and then after that, and then do it on the first work. And because while doing it, the ring finger is beneath under that, so imagine it’s been done So in the in the Heruka Tantra, so it’s been set for the all the the the yeah. All the heart of the yeah. Heart of the all the deities. One should one should put the mantra circle at heart of all the deities, but here it’s been said that one does not need to place the mantra around all the hearts of the of the old deities.
And then so what one should do is while doing the mantra recitation, imagine that one should imagine that as there there is a 37 deities in one’s heart. And and so but, and imagine that, imagine and before the earlier visualization, all the entire world system has been converted into the reality source. And in, in, in, and all the inhabitants are are generated into the Vajrayoginī. So do that
