About this talk. In this 90-minute session at Buddha House, Khensur Rinpoche walks a Western student through the full structure of monastic education at Sera Je monastery, working to produce an accurate written reference. Together they map the sequence of study classes — Dudra, Shunsarpa, and beyond — clarifying how long each stage takes, which textbooks different monasteries use, and how the Seventy Topics, Jamshum, and Turning the Wheel of Dharma debates are positioned within Shunsarpa. They also work through how the Ornament of Clear Realization and its commentaries relate to the broader study of the six perfections. The session closes on a poignant note: most of Rinpoche’s classmates were killed or died fleeing Tibet, and a divination steered him away from the lower tantric college — and from the path that might otherwise have led to the Ganden throne.

Six seven eight nine ten today is Thursday the twenty fifth of July nineteen ninety one today Today is Monday, the twenty second of July nineteen ninety one. So if you could just say to Rinpoche, I want I’ve been working on the classes and the tests. Did we finish those empowerment? I don’t think we did, but I can’t find his paper. Don’t know where we’re up to.
Not each of these. This is two years. This is one year. This is one year. Two, one, one.
Two one. One. One one u. One h. Karam.
Karam. So this karam is indefinite. It can be almost no period of time that they go into a karam or it can be indefinitely a few years until the abbot says that they can go on. What would be the absolute minimum that anyone could ever spend in it? One or two?
The calorama is in the six months. Oh, so what? Anywhere between six months and a lot of quite a few years. Months to two years. Five years.
Is that right? In short. Mhmm. What? Three to five years.
Three to five? Yes. Okay. So we’ve still got that it takes approximately twenty five years even though they’re done altogether exactly add up to twenty five. If someone someone is going to do their Geshe examination, it would take maybe generally twenty five years.
Okay. I’ll just put it aside like that. Just want to clarify this a bit more. I know I’ve asked before, but the monks that came for three or four years from Kham would only study up to Shulsatha? And the ones who are going back to Kham?
Yeah. The ones that just stayed for their regular period of time. And then we’re going to go back. They came, they had to stay a minimum of three years, which took them up to Uma Sarpa. No.
Shunsarpa. Shunsarpa. Shunsarpa. Now is that is that the beginning of Shunsarpa or the end of Shunsarpa? Shunsarpa Gobadu.
Would stay for Shunsarpa. All of Shunsarpa? Chosang. Shunsarpa Chosang. So they would complete Shunsarpa?
Yes. And then they would After that it was a well, after that it was a individual holiday. So that was sort of the obligation. If they came, they have to do Shul Saba. Yeah, that’s right.
They had to stay up, they had to study through Shinshapa. After that, it was their choice. So there was a lot of work involved in staying for Shunsarpa. And so after that then, having completed that, then they could go back. They could do whatever they wanted.
So could you ask Rinpoche, would it depend on how fast the particular class moved through, whether it took them, say, three years or four years or three and a half years to do the three dudras and So generally, it takes three years to do the three dudras and the shinsharka. Oh, wow. Okay. Doesn’t quite get me. But Is this we’re talking isn’t first chapter.
I suppose it’s all of them, isn’t it? That’s right. Can the Shinsar present it? Up to, they would study the first, they would study including the first chapter. So in that time they would study part the first check.
So, I mean, we’ve gotta clear this up in a minute. I just I’ve gotta clear it up a minute. It’s only me not understanding. So this Shunsapa, they’ve It’s on this is the first chapter. Yeah.
Right. So, so that’s what we’re talking about here that they’d studied Part of it. Part of it. Now are the seventy topics part of that chapter? You have the handout from the first So The eight chapters.
Right? No. Oh, is this is this like chapter one? This is chapter two. This is where this two starts or what?
So the So the perfection of wisdom is thoroughly explained in eight categories. There’s an eighth chapter, the first one is exalted knower or omniscience. This is, yeah, that It’s not. And it So that’s also known as omniscient mind. Is it?
Mhmm. That’s right. Exalted knower of all. And then I see. Out of the seventy topics, ten are studied within the first chapter of Ammunition Mark.
These are the ten. So there are ten topics. Out of the seventy topics in the whole book, ten are covered within the first chapter. There are eight chapters. Eight chapters.
There are seventy topics. Seventy topics. Just to show what I’m confused about so he knows what we’re doing. Topics. Oh god.
Ten of these studied in Shunsapa. Mhmm. No. I don’t Shunsapa is in the chapter in Shinshapa? No.
No. No. So they don’t cover all ten topics? Alright. So would it would it be better to cross out this seventy topics there at all?
I mean, it doesn’t really Over the entire book they cover, so they they study seventy topics. So that’s over five classes basically, isn’t it? Not and they Yeah. Yeah. So when I get when I when I get this text called seventy topics, it’s really another way of saying this this whole Yeah.
The mental game takes up seventy different topics. Right. But at other times we just say eight chapters and we go through the eight Seventy topics. So in some way these eight seventy topics are arranged within the eight chapters. Yeah.
There are ten topics in the first chapter. Yeah. For example. Yeah. That topics in the second chapter.
I see. So Alright. Studied all this? Uh-huh. Would it be better could you ask Rinpoche, would it be better to say that in the Shun and Sapa, they study the commentaries on omniscient mind?
It seems to be more what they do study, is it? From the very beginning. They study both. Yeah. Okay.
Alright. Yeah. Maybe I think. Yeah. Mhmm.
That’s what we’re There’s not much to the text. That’s all. Isn’t there? Perfection class is. So from the seventh.
Do you know what I’m what’s what’s being said here? Those take two years, is it they only take one year? Perfection classes after So for the seventh, there are eight chapters. Seven. This has nothing to do with it, is it?
No. This is just really confused in that case. Each college in each monastery has their own special textbook written by past scholars. Sera Je’s textbooks were written by Jetsün Chökyi Gyaltsen, who was born in He was the main main writer. Is that right?
He was born in San I don’t know who what’s Sanghnathe about the time of the first Dalai Lama. A Not that. That. Know, sir. Not that.
Y n y n y a. Mhmm. T r e. T r e. I think this is spelled with an o.
It’s song. It’s on. Oh, okay. Each monastery is a replica of of the other with the district houses and parallel courses of study. I’m just wanting to get a picture for Westerners like Sera Je, Sera Mey, etc.
They’ve got similar Cumsons and similar textbooks but each one has their own textbook. So they’re kind of parallel. Could you just check if it’s accurate to say something like that as an explanation? So so so so Gompa. Kumsan.
Comes. Comes in. Comes in. In. In.
So sometimes they would have the same comm sentences, sometimes they wouldn’t. What they had different textbooks. Like May doesn’t have a Trehor Khamtsen, but Jay does. But Drepung has Trehor Khamtsen. Ganden has Trehor Khamtsen, Sera Mey doesn’t.
So some of them, the common sense would be duplicated both in me and J, and some wouldn’t. So there’s no certainty that each of them would have all the various consonants. I see. I think. But each of them.
So the different colleges may not have the same common sense. But they would all have their own particular textbook from their own particular historical figures commenting on the main Some of them have the same textbooks. So one of the one of the textbooks of one So mainly they follow the textbooks. They follow Pänchen. The Pänchen Lama textbook.
Amdo Jamyang Zhepa. Amdo. Amdo Jamyang Zhepa. Is the Raje? Amdo Lama.
Amdo Lama. And this Pänchen Lama, this is a long time ago, is it? So that may be a lot of money about that. Also, Sera Mey has her own particular textbook. Does it mean series of textbooks?
Yeah. Textbook. Right? For all of these classes? Yeah.
That’s right. Same writer. They have their own. They have their own. Yeah.
That’s right. Same writer but covering the whole. Yeah. Go ahead. Terribution.
I don’t understand. If you could just both help me a little bit. I’ve been through that Italian guy’s books on. But if you could just give me a rough Tibetan title, it’s gonna make it really easy just to put the Tibetan names in. So this for, I’ve got the the root text is the Lesser Path of Reasoning by Jansen Poohboo Jockey Joc Jampa.
Sutram Gyatso, Tutu to the thirteenth Dalai Lama. I wanna clarify if that’s accurate and just get a rough Tibetan title Okay. Regenam. Chum. Chum.
Chum. Regenam. Chum. Now. And is that is that his full title?
That’s right. That’s correct. And the the. Mhmm. That’s fine.
The thirteenth Dalai Lama. Right. Okay. Now I got got very confused with this title, The Magic Key of Reasoning. Check is this separate from the following topics or should it just is it the name that covers a whole lot of the topics or where does this this So this is the general name for all three.
There’s a general name. Yeah. The the three dudras. Yeah. And each of them, there’s one which is small, medium Yeah.
And great. Yeah. Path of reasoning. And this, the magic key of reasoning That’s the name. Is the name for the whole lot of them.
The whole text. How does it come the whole text that they study in the whole lot. Yeah. That’s What’s just can you read a Tibetan title or an abbreviated Tibetan title? I think I’ll search.
Magic Key? Yeah. Rig along? Spelling to r u l, is it? Mhmm.
Yeah. D? D. D. Y I.
Name is the. D e M I g. D. So I’m guessing the spelling. That’s alright.
But anyway, I’m not sure I’m not sure about the trans this is the way this translation Don’t worry. Sure. Anyway, that’s the general text name. Now is that the root text for the three classes? Is that how you would refer to No, not called the root text.
You need to use that word. Because no commentary. So this is the text they studied. Okay. This is the text they studied for the whole three dudras.
Yeah. That is the three dudras. That is the three dudras. Yeah. Well, how does it relate to this one?
Just This is the three this is divided up in three parts. Right. This is the first one. Thank you. Rigolam Tummo.
Okay. The small, the lesser pass, the remaining. Then it has the second part, the middling, and third parts. Whole text. It’s called that’s that’s a general, you know, like yeah.
Yeah. So here where I’ve got colors This is the That relates to Small. The lesser. Talking about it. I have this text, we can take a look.
You do? Wondering. Rinpoche doesn’t want No, I have it on. Rinpoche is wondering whether it’s actually called this, the greater greater path of reasoning, whether it’s actually called this magic key or not. He’s sure.
Yeah. Well, I got really confused because wrote text with cross out. It’s just text, right? Yeah. So presumably, would be part part two of this.
Now could you just give me Tibetan name for it? Reglam Reglam Dingwa. Okay. Dream. Dream.
Dream. Confusing you. So I’ve and and in English I’ve got the middling path of reasoning. Mhmm. So just to double check, they’re all parts of this big thing.
And these are the topics in part two. That’s right. I wondered about getting a Tibetan terms, but maybe they’re variously there or not. I guess, maybe English will do. So then what would this third part be, the greater path of reasoning?
So that’s part three. Right? Mhmm. Okay. And this is the topics in part three.
So I’ve still gotta just double check with both of you on the name of the whole thing. Need to get all Tibetan names if possible for each subject. Is it necessary or not? I don’t think it’s necessary. I don’t think it wouldn’t be much worse to accept a scholar.
Okay. Not needed. Are these topics set out where does Lodrig Tarik fit in? Lodrig and Tarik, I don’t know. The the greater path of reasoning, they’re included within that.
There’s subjects which are topics which are taken up. But presumably I’ve got their English names here without knowing them, have I? Here. I beg your pardon, I have got them. Have got them.
So that’s correct. They’re just but for some reason, we keep referring to the Tibetan names of those parts quite often, and I haven’t got the Tibetan names of other parts. So that’s just two sort of fairly major parts, are they? Or fairly key parts? Mhmm.
That’s right. Okay. That’s why I wondered about Tibetan names of others because there’s quite a few references to those. But if I just leave those here. Okay.
These are so that could be yes. They are. So they’re probably the most advanced of part three, are they? Is that how it works? Central.
Yeah. I’m doing. She’s a good Yep. They’re the most advanced. Central.
Central. I don’t know the name of it. Central. Central. Okay.
You can’t call them advanced because because the other subjects are just as difficult. Okay. So Lorig and Tarig are the central part. So Ornament for Clear Realization by Chökyi Gyaltsen, who is also known as Jetsün Ba. Is that right?
No. It’s not. It’s coming the outline to this whole area. And then they weren’t It’s going on to The text. All we do at the end of time is look at all the various commentaries that have been written because the text used is an introduction to covering the outline to this huge area of ornament.
I mean, this makes it sound like it’s by this this text is not by Chökyi Gyaltsen. Orna for clear realization is not by Chökyi Gyaltsen, but that’s the way it sounds. The text used is an introduction covering the outline to this huge area. The huge area is fortune. Yeah.
Yeah. That perfection of wisdom. Yeah. Yeah. And then but you don’t have the title of the text then.
By by Jetson, what do we have? Maybe. I mean, you probably do. Jetson isn’t Jetson. Is that wrong, is it?
That’s his nickname, Jetsün Ba. It’s Jetsün Chökyi Gyaltsen. Same person. That’s his nick that’s his shortened name. Same person.
So don’t don’t don’t don’t use. Okay. Cross. Alright. Fine.
Fine. Fine. Do it properly. Yeah. Okay.
That’s alright. So I don’t know. I I think that’s out of place in the. Oh. Good way to begin, a class of literature which commences with class one and continues on through class five.
Is that a fairly good way of beginning that introduction to explain what they study in that class? The main text that is studied within vajraparamita is the ornament of clear realization, and it has many different subjects. Is that is that correct? Mhmm. Okay.
We then begin to study Jangshum, the text of Maitreya. Now I started to get a little confused here again with Jangshum ornament and Maitreya. All we do at this Shunsarpa is look at various commentaries that have been written concerning this. The text used is an introduction covering the outline to this huge area. That’s where we came in, Ornament for Clear Realization.
That have been written and see the relationship between the various commentaries. We call this Jamshum. Now is Jamshum I’m really confused, I think, about Jamshum, studying Maitreya’s texts. What’s all that? Are Indian comedies in twenty nine months and all these comedies that have been written in the situation between the various comforters.
We call this So this Yes. So, in order to clarify the, what was considered as to be the ways of conduct which were considered for one’s own purpose, for other purposes, for the welfare of others or one’s own welfare. We would distinguish between striving for one’s own welfare, the welfare of others, to distinguish between the path of the bodhisattva and the Buddha, and Jetsün Maitreya through Asaṇga, taught the Ornament for Clear Realization to Asaṇga at Tuśita. And so there is this text which sets out the distinguishment between the bodhisattva path and that which is not, which is the owner of a clear realization in Nuntha Gyan. And then there were various commentaries upon this text, as a root text.
And these taken together, that I refer to as Jamshun, the texts of Maitreya. Both the ornament? And the various commentaries taken together are generally referred to as the texts of Maitreya. Studying Maitreya’s text. Okay.
I’m gonna top that up and see if I can make sense out of that. In this class, we study two subjects. Outline of seventy topics of ornamental materialization, Dongdongma. Is that right? Dongdhunma.
Dongdhunma. Where have I got Dongdhunma? It’s not Dongdhunma. That’s right. You had that you had that before.
Yeah. We talked about that. Which one was right before? The opposite one or this one? Denture.
It’s I’m not quite sure. So it’s this one. There is a text this one, isn’t there? Yeah. No.
Has nothing to do. That’s a different text altogether. I think this is j u but j u. Okay. Okay.
So the outline of seventy topics of ornament of clear realization is one subject studied in Shunsarpa. Is right? Don’t think you just you don’t need this word outline. Okay. Seventy Topics is the name of the text.
It is a text called Seventy Topics. That’s what the indenture means. Oh, that means seventy topics. Mhmm. Oh, I’ve got it probably down here.
Okay. And and grounds, was that sa lam? sa lam, l a m. Now these these are also studied. Now this is in chapter one Omniscient Mind.
That’s in Shinshara, they take a few. So this isn’t the only thing they’re studying? But This is all this is If this is in chapter one, then that comes under that anyway, doesn’t it? This is this is This is the big Semi Topics is is a small little text which just they just learn the the names of the the topics and the definitions. Oh.
Right. That’s all they do. sa lam is the same thing. I see. They’re just learning definitions and and and the outline.
Right. So it’s just little text. I see. And and are they by Jetsün Chökyi Gyaltsen? Yes.
Yes. So they didn’t take a year altogether. That’s nonsense. Right? No.
Seventy times is just an outline of ornament. Okay. So that’s just an outline as you explained. Mhmm. And I’ve got is this by that author above?
Yes. It is. Do they refer to this again in other classes to keep you up a bit fresh? They is it something they keep coming back to? Or is it just some No.
No. I mean, they I mean, they they might do an as far as their own study even that formula. Okay. So many topics and paths and grounds are included in the the greater path of breathing. The Dudra temple.
Oh, well, I had them there, and then we moved them. We moved them out of there. So it’s a So what should I do that they put both of those? Mhmm. The greater path, that is.
Okay. So they come after maybe. Do they? That’s right. Okay.
Yeah. Okay. And, also you can put tenants. Oh, I’m so confused. Tenants.
I’m not sure where where I’ve got all that. Tenants are going in Dudra. That’s right. Plus, Tenants. Ducta.
This text is by so many topics and seven meanings. Seventy meanings. What’s this? I don’t know. Dictionary.
Could you just check with Rinpoche, is it really that all the studies of ornament begin in Dudra? Is that right? So do they look at sa lam? Do they look at So they really haven’t started the text yet in the Duja. They say that they haven’t really started ornament.
No. So this even though and they also Dudra also has parts of Nubarthika, but they don’t say they’re they’re studying Brahma Nubarthika just because they’re studying parts of it. So also when they’re studying Dudra, they’re studying And in the small dudra, you know, they study things like colors, but that comes from the Abhidharma. They don’t say they’re studying Abhidharma. Oh.
So they’re they’re studying so many topics in dudra. They don’t say they’re studying ornament. Okay. Thank you. So we’re so we start with this overview of jump Jungshu.
And we did is this Is this They can go back to calm. They have to sit three debates. One on the one on the the great dutra, which is mainly the seventy topics. And the second, they have to sit on the Jamshun. Jamshun sets out, you know, the it sets out, as it says here, the relationship between the various commentaries.
And this is at the Shunsarpa class. And then they also have that’s at the beginning. No. So at the beginning of Shinshara, they have to sit, they study Jamshoom, which is a text which takes up the what they study is not a text. This is the study of the relationships, what commentaries were written for the ornament, etcetera.
And then at the end of the Shinsarpa, they study what is called Chukur, turning the wheel of dharma. And they have to sit and debate on that. Then after they complete that, then they go home. So that first debate, does that come at the end of Dudra? Dudra Chera, Dudra Chera, seventy topics.
That wouldn’t be very much, would it? It would just be learning the names, wouldn’t it? You said it wasn’t a really big book. Just just so topics. Just the the seventy topics.
Just the overview of all of them? Mhmm. And that that is at the end of Dudra, they said that? The Dudra Chewa Kopsa. Beginning of So after they finished the awareness and knowledge and signs and reasonings, then they study seventy topics and paths and grounds.
And then they have to sit debate on seventy topics. Then they begin the then the first one of the first things they study when in Sinsarpa is Jamshum. Then they have to sit and debate on that. And then at the end of almost at the end of Sinsarpa, have to have to set three debates. So these three debates, the seventy topics in ninja, the text of Jetsün Maitreya, Jamshom, and then Chukur, Turning the Wheel of Dharma.
And is it in the Kamsan? Kamsan The Kamsan source of together. Uh-huh. So Mhmm. To everyone who’s studying seven topics, that would be their class, and then they’d have to sit debate in that class, Jongsheng or Chukwu, turning so it’s not a comm sentence, it’s a private And so it wouldn’t just be the ones returning to comm or Whether they’re going back or not.
Yeah. They all yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s alright.
I’m just on my own. So I’ve got all these topics, and I’m not sure. The three exalted wisdoms. So this is what for what then? This is the same this is still Shunsapa.
This is actually because we put tenets, sa lam, and the other back into Dudra. So is this where we start apart from the Jamshum, the overview? Is that where we come on to the actual There’s a few more down here. I’m not quite sure if I’ve got So this is what we just And this tenets goes to Dudra. And this is go this goes Where’s the rest of them?
Down here. So so you should put that in. That’s not included. The reasoning, one and many. The reasoning of one and many.
The reason of? The reasoning of One. One. What’s its Tibetan name? Chik Tangel.
Chik again? Chik. Chik. Chik. Chik.
Tong, t a n g. Gel. Gel. D r d r a l. A l.
Okay. Cheektundra. Ripa. Ripa. Ripa.
Ripa. Ripa. I g R I g p a. Oh, that’s the end of it. Yeah.
Okay. There’s cancer. Which one? So this is up here. Right?
Sorry? This is up that’s up there. Wait. This one? No.
This one. That’s where? This is up they’re turning the wheel. Oh, that’s right. No.
That’s right. I’m sorry. Oh, alright. Leave it in. Yeah.
I just put a step. Okay. Okay. Is all we have to say. And young doctor?
Young doctor. Young doctor. Okay. So this is alright? Yeah.
What was Rinpoche saying emptiness? This one. This is this is the reason we established this emptiness. Oh. That’s okay.
So this is right, the three exalted wisdoms in the Vana. Kinsung, yande, chakur, yong dakta. And then straight following, is it paths and grounds, sunlight? That’s up in Dudra. They’re tied.
They changed. Why are they hanging around here then? What have I done? So that goes This is back to Dudra. This this Is that Tenets?
Is that Tenets? No. This Is that is is this all Dudra or just this one? Just that. Just No.
That’s yeah. That goes up in the Dudra. Just this one? Yeah. Oh, how did I bother to do that?
Two Dudra. Number three? That’s So turning the wheel of Dharma, Chos Khor. That’s right. Check these two in relation to first.
It’s this of reality. What was this? It’s the above. But we’re calling it the reasoning of what I’m thinking. No.
It’s here. It limits it limits reality. Yeah. Oh. So it’s only that one that stays in.
Yeah. And that goes I’ll just move it up to to join the others. Right? Check and sort all this further with help. Should this be arranged?
And now these are all parts of chapter one? You the first first chapter first chapter. Alright. Now that’s not the whole of the first chapter, though, that’s covered in Shunsaba. Shunsaba is in the.
No. No. No. And that what you said before, there was actually ten topics in the whole of the first chapter. It takes four classes to complete the first chapter.
So you don’t finish the first chapter till? We’ve been talking about up to now has been the first chapter. No. No. All all down to Shulneva.
So, all these four classes, what they study is the first chapter. Yeah. So is is that these ten topics? So they begin to study the second chapter in the Purkin class. And that’s the second chapter is this one here, eleven topics of Noah and Paz.
Is that right? Mhmm. I don’t start in Pänchen. Mhmm. So how how long does that one take then?
Two years. Two years for chapter two? Two years for approaching class. But do do they study more than this chapter? Company per company per gearing target.
Maybe two, three months. Two, three months. Uh-huh. So they they they study all eight chap all the mean, seven chapters in in departure. Oh, that’s right.
That’s right. Okay. When I copy it out, will I copy out each one of these? Or Those are all the topics. Mhmm.
This is These are the these are the The main topics, would that be chapter four then or chapter three? I just find it a bit hard to find my way around all this. So this is eleven topics of knowers and the Path. It’s on page eight of the notes. And it just seems like oh, this one is chapter oh, so that’s chapter four.
Right? Mhmm. Okay. So it has eleven topics. So let me just go down to It’s going on forever.
Turn down. Turn down here. Over to here. Training aspects, eleven topics. So one, two, three.
The fourth chapter. There are is that where chapter five then starts? Chapter seven. Chapter eight. Thank you.
Sungipa is Sungipa? Sungipa. Oh, yeah. So this taking this into ten topics. So this part of these were Part of ten topics.
Continue. So at the beginning of first one is Sim K. Sim K. Mhmm. So that’s not the first chapter because these are I mean, the first topic.
This is just a continuation. Okay. Kipsum. Kipsum. Kipsum.
And these come under that topic. Is that right? That’s And if I refer back to that Yeah. Hello there. Okay.
Refer refer printed notes. Check extra titles from this older list. What have I got here, Jumbo? What on earth have I got here? Three refuges, two truths, definitive and interpretive sutras, dependent arising, meditative concentration and absorption.
Those are the texts that they also say. Is Okay. That yeah. About them? They belong there?
Yeah. They do. Does they all study within the within the first chapter. They’re commentaries, are they? No.
There’s the subjects which are taken up for study. But then what is that? Well, there seem to be a lot more than ten. Right. One two three four five six seven eight nine ten.
And then there’s the ones here. This is this is Shinging this is Shing Saaba. Yeah. But still still part of the first ten. If you just yeah.
If you’re sticking a linguistic. What’s actually you sorting here so I understand? Where are these explained in these ten topics, these subjects come up? So I mean this is the information release and I say what the way I mean yeah some of it would be precepts. Mhmm.
I see. Four benches and a finish. Mhmm. Some of some of these Yeah. Yeah.
Like it doesn’t have to put in there. No. Some of some of these are are some of these subjects gonna some of these subjects are taken up. Oh, that’s right. Yeah.
Under precepts, you have two truths, four truths, three refuges. Is that That’s what’s these subheadings? For the four truths. So this is precepts. Right?
Precepts. Mhmm. The second topic. And then under that is the four truths. Oh, I see.
So I think this will clarify too. Okay. Thanks. Alright. Well, that’s good.
At least I know now what that relates to. I couldn’t really find my way around it before. That’s great. Think the one you have to complete. I did to complete this second part of the chapter one.
That’s not true. It takes three years, four years. Four years. Where is that? Know, you’ve got one year.
Roughly one year to complete this second part. It’s the second part, you can say that. It’s not all of five, chapter one. I mean, well, you don’t have to. It doesn’t make much it doesn’t have much meaning.
No. I’d cross it out because Yeah. This You just say that the whole thing takes four years. So that’s just looks like it’s another list of the same, really. I’ll just so I can just check it all.
Yeah. Okay. Mhmm. Check authors and Tibetan names. Are these parts of ornament or commentaries?
So this is all ornament proper now, isn’t it? It’s not commentaries? Do they look at commentaries at the same time? At the same time. So they’ll look at the subjects in non Non Non Dagyan.
And then at the same time, I’ll look at commentary is very short. It’s a little text. You couldn’t study it from just that. It’s only fifty pages. So you have to study other texts.
Okay. So I’ve got the author just just refresh. I’m sure I know I’ve got who’s the author of that? A what? And its other name is Abhisham Abhisamayalankara.
That’s right. Abhisamayalankara. What where does how does a link with that that both Sanskrit? So the the part what did you say? Part pardon to means perfection.
Yeah. And there are six. And the main subject which is took taken up in in the Abhishamyankara is the six perfections. So that’s the relationship between Prajñāpāramitā and Abhisamayalankara. One of the six perfection is Prajñāpāramitā, perfection of wisdom.
Right. So the the So this is bigger. Abhisamayalankara takes up the subject of the six perfections. The whole of the six of them. Mhmm.
So it’s a much wider scope than Than what? The Prajñāpāramitā, which is for one of them. Is that what you say? Prajñāpāramitā. They’re one of the one of the perfections is Prajñāpāramitā.
Yeah. So this is really implying a much wider class of literature. Yeah. So the Prajñāpāramitā is a perfection of wisdom, which is the which is the fulfillment of the realization of angelic emptiness, is the main subject which was taken up in Abhisamayalankara. But there’s also that.
There’s a part in So all of it, but the Abhisamayalankara takes up all, there’s generosity, perfection of generosity, ethics, etcetera, the six perfections. And Abhisamayalankara takes up all six of them, but mainly it takes up the perfection of wisdom. Alright. So this is really what Rinpoche has been teaching this this year? He taught this text.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Tradition that if it comes that a class should study definitive interpretive sutras, then this is a sign that maybe someone in that class will be the throne holder of Ganden, the Ganden Tripa.
I think that’s what they studied in Rinpoche unless I’ve got it wrong. So I just wondered if that happened when did Rinpoche study that? Yeah. It did, didn’t it? Definitive and interpretive sutras.
So that was when Rinpoche was in Sukho Sarpa. He’d studied. K. Sukho And and he said that there was that tradition that that would be the Ganden Tripa in that class would be the Ganden Tripa. I just wondered if that had happened in that particular year, there someone who later went on to be the Ganden Tripa?
Okay. And Tony Lahini put, the tradition, but it didn’t necessarily follow every class, but most of them had I’ve been right. Maybe it was me. Told him all the out of his class. Already died out of his class.
Most of them are gone. Pardon? Most of the students from his class are are gone. Gone. What?
Fifty nine or later? The I mean, there was two months in the past year. No, If it hadn’t been for the oppression of the Chinese, it’s possible that there might have been a throne holder from his class. Yeah. But many of them were killed.
So he’s referring to Lotwin at that time, is it? Because the gaming had to games in the proper mobile. Oh. So many died from race. Some of them died, yeah, were killed, some of them died of fever, some of them died along the path trying to escape various ways.
So if it had remained intact, situation had remained, there’s a possibility that a throne holder might have come from his class. If Rinpoche had entered into the lower tantric college when he came back, when he came to India, then it’s possible that he could have been the throne holder by now. Entered into the lower tantric college. He would have probably been in line for the the throne holder by now. So it always the throne holder always comes from the lower tantric, does it?
The so It alternates between the upper and lower tantric college. But always from the tantric college. Oh. And that was It was his choice, and they had sent him a letter asking him to join. Oh.
And he went to the teacher of Mamuche and asked him to throw him a divination, which was best. So it turned out that not to go was better. So that he stayed at Sera. The Sera-less, Shibati.
