About this talk. In this 92-minute biographical interview, Khensur Rinpoche describes his childhood in Rongpatsa, Kham — the village near Dargye Gompa where he lived for one and a half years before the Chinese arrived. Guided by an interviewer compiling a life-story book for Western readers, Rinpoche traces his family origins (father from Kham, mother from Kongpo in central Tibet) and reconstructs rural Tibetan life in vivid detail: the three-storey rammed-earth farmhouses where animals occupied the ground floor and barley straw was stored in the loft; traditional Khampa dress including the long-sleeved chuba and baggy boots; boys dressed in white wool chubas to signal monastic intention before taking vows; how dzomo (yak-cow crossbreeds) yielded more milk than the female yak; and the village headman known as the Undo. A rare first-person window into pre-occupation Tibetan village life.

Seven. He stayed at Dargye Gompa, but he was only able to stay there one and a half years when the Chinese came in. Did you say one and a half years? It was yeah. After one and a half years, staying at Dargye Gompa, the Chinese came in.

Oh. Yeah. This was at earlier in the Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

About forty two about forty two or so. I know. So you had two two uncle monks? Yeah. They were staying there at the time.

So these two uncles, did you write those down? The oldest one was I didn’t. No. I didn’t get them. So the That’s his his mother’s No.

His father’s I think that’s his father’s son’s. His mother’s son. Yeah. There were two there were two brothers who were both monks. Yeah.

So they were The the oldest one? The older one was Yeah. His name was How do you spell that? The younger one was So they were staying at the monastery with him. Were his two teachers.

And what was his aunt’s name? The one that brought him up like a mother. We haven’t got her name either. It’s their sister. There’s many Droma in your family.

So just by the by can a Droma can be for a man as well. I think So in general, they would name they would give that name to a boy in the case that there was he would his life was in danger when his child Oh, in order before he died, if there was some if he’s angry, he’s sick and there was some danger that was dying, they would they would give him the name Doma. But in general, it was for a woman. Thank you very much. Good stuff.

Got you’ve seen my slides from Tibet. Just a few. Maybe I should try and bring a couple next time just to to look at the countryside. And talk. Yeah.

Would that be a good idea? Sure. Yeah. It’s good. Yeah.

Well, what time next week? Thursday again, or you got time earlier? Cut it on the. Yeah. Yeah.

So he’ll think about some kind of Yeah. Can talk about later. That’d be wonderful. I want the western tradition here. Well, you could you could say that there could be a small dedication, a small one and a long one.

I mean, the long one can come in at some other stage if it you know, we could have whatever he feels whatever he feels. I think it might be better if you say that you would like to have one. Oh, yes. Yeah. But I mean Yeah.

I’m I’m I’m saying I like it too if he wants to give a short one and a long one. And and tell Rinpoche anything he thinks of, anything at all, memories, just to we can talk about the next time if anything comes into his mind. It’s it’s all very interesting. Very good. You just jot it down.

Yeah. Yeah. But to them, I like the naughty bits as well. Tape again. So you say that this place of Rinpoche where is it?

Dargye Yeah. Dargye Gompa and Rongpatsa. The Rinpoche Rongpatsa. Rinpoche’s village is just like a little suburb. Yeah.

Rongpatsa. Of this Rongpatsa. Yeah. And and where do your family come from again? You can’t find it yet.

Kham. Kham. Is it little, small, or Oh, it’s small, I think. Kham. It should still be here, shouldn’t it?

Where? I don’t know. But this has all come over here, so it must be Where the combo? Where’d you want combo? Combo.

Combo is a very nice place near. Combo. Get the little map. Two. Kongpo is my mother.

Oh. Kongpo. Yeah? Is my father. Oh.

Then I am son. Your Father. I see. So you’ll It’s doing The son will follow the father. Follow the father.

What about the daughter? Pomo. Daughter for the mother? My daughter. Really?

Yeah. Kongpo. So your mother comes from Kongpo. Yeah. Father comes from Kham.

Yeah. No. You just had it now. This Is it? Doug.

Doug. Doug. Yep. Yeah. Yeah.

I put a tea here for Tenzing. I’m putting a here for. Mother. Then your mother comes that’s a big area, though, isn’t it? It’s a big area.

There now, there are many Chinese factory in blanket. They’re very nice. Oh, very place. In North Carpet factory? Yeah.

Carpet. Is it? What did you say? Blanket. Blanket.

Yeah. Blanket. Chinese blankets. Oh, Chinese blankets. Yeah.

Not today. You put here. They’re very close, many anything. Many Chinese? Yeah.

Mhmm. Blanket, any factory. Mhmm. So do you know what town she comes from in Kongpo? Oh, Kongpo Nyeche.

Yeah. The Nyeche. Nyeche. Ah, right. Nyeche?

Yeah. This one. I’ve got Nyeche. Yeah. Is that still in Kham?

Is your mother Khampapa or only your father? Father. Only father. So your mother comes from where? What’s that?

Just Central Tibet. Tibet. Tibet. Tibet. Tibet.

Tibet means in Kongpo, it’s just different in now. Yeah. In has a people Kongpo is has a Oh, sing. Encompasses come. Yeah.

Yeah? Don’t put here. Okay. Oh, that’s good. So did your parents marry in India or before they married, before they left Tibet?

In Tibet. In Tibet? In Tibet. And where did they live then? In Kongpo.

Whereabouts did they live? Did they live in In father. Father lived in Kongpo. Oh, your father came down? Yeah.

Oh, that’s good. Oh, that’s just a photo I took in India waiting to see his holy So how far would it be from How far from Lhasa? Pardon? How far would Kongpo be from Lhasa? I don’t understand.

Doesn’t matter. Two days. Two days travel. Is that by horse or what? Walking foot.

Ten day, fifteen days. Fifteen days to the to Yeah. Mhmm. This is a truck. Truck.

Fifteen days. So many months otherwise. These are in two days. Two days truck? Yeah.

Truck. By truck. Yeah. I just look right. It’s now Thursday the third of November nineteen eighty eight and I’m going down to have a second interview session with Khensur Rinpoche on his life story.

One two three four five six seven. Come would wear these big hats as she’s wearing in this photograph. Mhmm. But this is He’s a man. Isn’t he?

Didn’t wear these red hats. No. Just the men. Did did Rinpoche’s father Khanu star? Khanu Pala, the the younger people.

Younger people? Yeah. Just by the they just to because it looked nice to wear. The the older people wouldn’t wear the red hat. Oh, how did they have their hat in?

Yeah. They would they they got the hair on the head big and fasten their hair. Wouldn’t it fall off? Do they have pins? I’d like to get a photo of that.

I wonder where we could get it. Could could Rinpoche describe describe how his house was built when he was a little boy, the house he lived in that we were talking about last time, to how many floors and Can I Mhmm? Mhmm. Mhmm. It had three floors?

Three floors. Yeah. Mhmm. From the bottom floor? Bottom floor were the animals.

Then the second floor, people would would would stay? The second floor. Yeah. Mhmm. Where would the staircase be?

How would you get up from the bottom? Oh. In the in the top floor, would keep the feed for the animals. Oh. Something like the, I guess, the straw, things like that.

Right. Like the horses and things like that. Yeah. So they they’d be on the third floor. So they’d they’d keep Yeah.

So, yeah, this would actually cut a crop, for example, barley. Uh-huh. Then once they husk the barley not husk cultivate the barley, then that’d I guess, what you call straw Ah. Would be left over, and they would store that in the top floor. Yeah.

So in December, when when the crops that they raised, the what what, you know, what couldn’t be used for human consumption was would be all stored in here Right. And fed to the animals. For over the winter. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. And they’d they’d use all that up in the one year, or would they have some that was stored for more than a year, you know, that lasts Anxiety. Year. Yeah. And those those wooden steps, were they removable?

Like, when they were sleeping at night, would they pull up the steps? So they weren’t staffed with ladder. Sorry. Ladder. Yeah.

Ladder. I mean Did did the ladder, did they calculate. They they couldn’t it was very thick and heavy. Right. So it was always thick.

Yeah. They couldn’t lift it up. Yeah. Yeah. Or they would yeah.

No. I just wondered. Yeah. So there was leave it there all the time. Yeah.

And they had the same going up to the loft, I guess. So they had they had very thick, you know, poles, and then they would cut roots. And then they would make a Circular poles. Yeah. This Jake.

Was a a huge trunk of a tree. Ah. And it was just cut Rolled. Steps into the trunk of a tree. Oh.

And this would be the ladder. This is how they would climb. Oh. Well, I’m jumping around, but what sort of tree was it? Must have come from that mountain at the back of the Sindhi.

As you know of. Mhmm. What is on this? It’s called tongshin, and I think it’s a pine tree. Tongshin?

Tongshin. I think we should I think Some sort of pine. I think it’s a pine kind type of pine tree because I think it has pine cones. Oh, right. So yeah.

So I think that’s what I’m not sure about. Oh, that’s the pine cone you’ve enjoyed. Yeah. Yeah. And I think it had needles.

So Oh, I must bring one of my pine nuts and see if it’s similar. I could. Yeah. Would you explain to Rinpoche that because this book’s for Westerners, I have to ask the most stupid questions that are even more stupid than I am so that we can so I can, you know, describe the whole life. Would his house be anything similar to these?

Or Can I can I no? It’s very similar to to these type of houses. So was it made of or what were the walls made of? So it wasn’t it was made out of earth. It wasn’t stone.

It wasn’t wood. It was earth. It’s a foundation of stone. The what? The floor?

Yeah. Not just foundation. And then a layer of thick wood? Yeah. Is this just for And big log is big as and then big log is what is about eight inches thick.

It’s as high as a person higher than a person? And then It’s like more earth in this town. More earth in this town. Become very hard. Did they And then she didn’t do Then they once they had done that, then they’d they’d take the wood off and put another form on top and tie that up with rope, and then it start doing the same process again.

Alright. How long did it take to build one wall then? One or days for one more. Oh, that’s all. It’s a particular chick name of chick ni.

All the family work, men and women and children? So all the the the friendly villagers Yeah. Would come and help. So we had to do all the they everybody would be doing all the different types of works. I’m gonna be carrying the earth.

I’m gonna be pounding the earth. So during the time when they weren’t planting or cultivating, there’d be lots of time to do these things. How long would a house last? Those how long would those walls No. So the first floor, they would they would do this pounding of the this earth process.

Yeah. So then but the second floor would be the interior wall would be made out of wood, and the exterior would be finished off with mud. Oh, mud mud on the wood. Mhmm. The interior.

Said he said that first, so I knew. Yes. The top floor, which is made out of mud. Is it mud roof? Mhmm.

Is it a mud roof? Yeah. Do they I’ve always wondered this. How do they get the roof to stay up? It’s a flat roof, isn’t it?

Do they have some sort of ceiling or, like, when they were putting the mat on, they must have had did they have wood wooden frames or something? So there’s there were just many many many beams. Oh, that wasn’t that’s enough. And the beams, and then there was pillars to support. With with that bottom wall, did they mix water with the the the round earth between the water?

No water. It’s just drier. It just rammed in. Mhmm. Oh, that’s interesting.

Yeah. So I think yeah. It said underneath the they dig out the earth, and the earth beneath what he says was moist. Oh. So it must maybe it’s like clay.

I don’t know what Just just the moist moist earth. Yeah. Might be the type of soil. It was an extra plain. Just check if this see if it’s working.

Yeah. So it’s just the the soil, after they dug away, was moist. It wasn’t exactly clear. No. Did it have to be a special soil?

I mean, they knew the type of soil that would work. Would any soil work? So there are different qualities. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. And how long would that sort of house last for when it was built? Would it last for many years, or would they have to rebuild in a year or so? Oh. So if they if it was done well Yeah.

And it was constructed well, it would last one or two lifetime. Oh, wow. Funny. But it was dependent on how how well it was constructed. Good soil, good So they didn’t have clay.

Right. So they didn’t have much pottery things either then, I suppose, because pottery would come from clay. And separate the? Yeah. But they used to have clay pots and pitchers and things, but they would come from outside of this area.

Yeah. Mhmm. Oh, good. Would the would the walls be anything like this one? Mark the bay David, that base, would that be made the same as the base one?

Can the can I only comp it? Look at it. Look at it. Mhmm. Are there is that are there small walls made from stone?

I’m not sure. They might be. I’m not sure. Not a stone. But, sir, these are the charworta.

These are the charworta. Like that on the outside. Yeah. But he’s not sure if there’s water or made of just earth or stone. I understand.

So what about clothes? What what clothes do the men and women wear? Pictures? Yeah. Like, there’s a woman here.

Did the women dress similar to that? So these are Lhasa women. Yeah. How can he tell? They like these aprons very much.

Didn’t the women in Kham wear those aprons? Can I get transferred? They didn’t like this very much. The the the aprons. Oh, so they didn’t wear?

Mhmm. And they wouldn’t wear their hair like that? How would they have their hair? So the hair would hang down very far in the back. Right.

Did did did they the ones that had the many plaits? The half and eight plaits? They came many plants. So they were I’ll skip that one. Many.

Many. Yeah. I asked him a So things have changed since he was small, the way they would be dressing and appearing now. Ah. Things have changed.

What what does he notice most especially? The Before this, when he was young, before they would wear the chuba? Chuba. Yeah. A woman would would definitely wear a long chuba.

Yeah. And a man would wear this short To the knee. Yeah. They were always yeah. They were this big big long I guess they call them chubas.

It’s a big, long Jacket. Jacket. Yeah. Big, long jacket that came down. This is the men.

Yeah. Tied with the tied at the waist, wouldn’t it overlapping? So the the the kind of the very long Oh, yeah. Long sleep. Yeah.

It’s very, very big. Yeah. You said long sleep? Yeah. But it was very big and go down.

I just go down past her hand. Eighteen inches, two feet. Yeah. So be very long. The men below.

Below the knee. So their pants were very they they were pants which were extremely Loose or Big. Baggy. Baggy. Yeah.

Pants? Yeah. This. Yeah. Yeah.

So it wouldn’t be tight. It’d be very, very big. Baggy. Do they also wear this this chuba thing over the top down to the knee or not? Under the the chuba there.

Yeah. So they’d wear that also. Oh, and the pants underneath. Do The the With big Oh, with big, long boots. Ah, yes.

So the the pants get tucked into the boots? And the the the the So they’d fold them over and put them the in the. Uh-huh. Yeah. They fold them over all the all the excess and put it down in the boot.

Was it Oh, now they wear boots like this. Nowadays? Yeah. And they wear short short sleeved chubas. Oh.

So before they used to be very Oh, I see. So the boots before would be big ones up to up to knee or something. Yeah. Yeah. And things on.

Oh. Then now the boots are very short, and the short sleeves have become much shorter. So and if it’s not cold out, then they they wouldn’t even they wouldn’t even wear their chubas these days these days. So even before, they would never do that. They’d always wear their chubas.

It’s time. So was it a very cold climate even in the summer? Yeah. Was warm in summer. So I should do So in general, it was very cold there.

But in the summer, it rained. The and the weather was it was very pleasant. It wasn’t cold or hot. Oh, a lot of rain in summer. The So a lot of rainfall in this one.

So it’d be very good for growing crops. So, yeah, it was a a lot of benefit to the crops. Just forgot to ask about the children, what the children would have worn when he was growing up. Did they wear little versions of the adult clothes? So they they cut a yadu.

So during the summer, they would wear chubas made out of red wool chubas. Red wool chubas. Red wool. Red wool chubas. And the ones who were going to become monks Yeah.

They would wear white. Oh. The So they wouldn’t dye they wouldn’t dye the wool if they if they weren’t gonna make when to become monks. So that was a sign that you were going to be a monk if you were free. Oh.

Yeah. They hadn’t taken vows yet, but they it was as if they were Yeah. They they would make a statement that they were gonna become monks. Yeah. But those who weren’t were just wouldn’t dye there.

They were. So even before they if they were dressed this way, even before they became a monk, the people would invite them to have tea and give them money because they were going to become monks. Oh, even when it’s our little little boys. So when the and the marble and So they were only okay. Once they become so they wouldn’t give them especially, they would wear these red chubas.

And then eventually, when they went to a monastery, then the people would give them money, and they would invite them over for tea when they went when they actually went to the monastery. In the monastery. Yeah. But yeah. Not up to that time.

It wasn’t special. Yeah. Yeah. So I just wasn’t clear. That’s good.

Thank you. Could you ask Rinpoche when it was harvest time? Was that similar to the to how they would harvest and how it would look in his area? Skinny is such a lot of I think they’re planting, aren’t they? Yeah.

They’re harvesting. It’s it’s autumn. Yeah? Yeah. It’s like this.

Yeah? Good. Yeah. Yeah. Just like this.

So if we wanted to put a photo in the book, could we use a photo like that if we didn’t have an old couldn’t find an old photo? He thinks it’s it’s gonna be okay. I’d just like to ask a little bit more about horses. I think horses are important in Kham. Do they have carts?

Did the horses pull carts when he was a boy? Or Carts. Yeah. I’ve got a little photo of of a man, and it was actually a donkey pulling a cart, and I’m I’m not sure which one it’s in. Just a minute.

I think it’s in one of those you can see. So the the monks yeah. This is called a. Oh. And the monks would wear a red one.

Oh. Like this. Yeah. I used to have one. Did you?

Yeah. I remember. How do you spell it in English? Or how do you say it? So just, yeah, it’s with the cold weather when you you’d wear.

And what about the color? Does the color is the color significant like that one sort of Oh, Tashilhunpo’s in is it? So Tashilhunpo, they they they so Tashilhunpo, they would wear yellow. What what would that be? Different area?

He’s never gone there, but they they wear They wear yellow hats? They do. Yeah. Yellow yellow doggums. It’s just the custom voice.

A cloak. Yeah. He doesn’t know why. And and so at that always we read. Yeah.

They would wear red red cloaks. Do they have that? Sera. Sera, Drepung, Ganden, they would Ganden they would wear a red cloak. Red red also.

Yeah. Oh. And the same the the hats too? What you call them? So the the hats would be yellow.

What’s it called? Its name? Yeah. Zhwa mo. Zhwa mo.

Zhwa mo. Zhwa mo. Zhwa mo. Zhwa mo. Zhwa mo.

Are many different types of hats. Does Rinpoche’s hat have any symbol? The abbot would wear a special hat. Officials would wear a different type of hat. Yeah.

And then the regular monks would wear a different type of hat. The kushok, is that a lay official or monastic official? So someone would be would come down flat in back and someone will be sticking out in back? So he has a special hat since he’s was an abbot. Not it’s a bit different than the rest of the What’s his hat look?

Tapers down and down. That’s the back? Yeah. This is the back. It tapers down.

It’s in the back. Flat at the back. And then just Comes out like a beak almost at the front. Yeah. I’ve seen photos.

I’ll get a photo. Does he have a photo of himself in the K. The So, yeah, Sera has many many photos when he was the abbot. Uh-huh. And then he wore that type of a hat.

Yeah. Yeah. Oh, good. Do he doesn’t have one with him now? Okay.

Back to horses, Jampa. Did or did the horses or donkeys, did they have carts? Look. Just like this. Tugger.

Tugger real. Tugger real. Tugger Tugger real. It’s like cart. Tugger.

Tugger real. Did they have carts in? This had bicycle wheels. This is a this is a donkey. Yeah.

I know it’s a donkey. Do do they have carts of any sort? Can I use such a Vehicles? Before they did before they didn’t have any. That’s what I read.

That’s why. But maybe they have them these days. But in his day, they didn’t have? They didn’t have. So they I mean, they had these all these animals, but they didn’t have these they they would they would never pull carts.

Right. So they yeah. That’s what I was really thinking. Dzo can do it. Mhmm.

So that the animal itself would carry whatever. Have pack saddles at the side? Or This comes with tea. So they did. Yeah.

Yeah. So how did they look after their horses? Did the horses live where did the horses sleep at night? They didn’t live in the bottom of the house. It wouldn’t be big enough for them.

The the animals would the horses would stay inside They did. On the on the first floor. Must have been quite big. Yeah. That’s very big.

How many horses would their family have had? Generally, normally, like, have twenty four. Oh. Oh. Yeah.

They would all stay inside. It was a big Very, much. The dri. A female yak that we call yak. Yaks are male.

Yeah. So a female yak is a is is dri. A dri. Dri. Now a dzo is a cross between.

There’s a What? There’s a dza. This is dza. Dzo? Dzo?

Dza? Or last time I write it down, I was just They wouldn’t keep you. They would the the would stay outside. The would stay outside. Does I’ve got the dzo which is a cross between a yak and a cow.

Yeah. What’s the female yak? Dri. Dri. Dri.

Yeah. That’s what we yeah. Dri. Dri. Dri the.

Dri. Dri. So that’s a Yes. The posse. Is a female, yak is a male.

Dri is a male. Male. Dri Dri of this is a yak, and a female is a trophy. Ah, so that’s yeah. That’s a perfect So you get the male.

Male. Male doesn’t have an email. Okay. And what about the the dzo? Does the dzo have milk?

The cross? Or Dzomo. Dzo is a What’s a long? A a bull, a cattle, a cow. They use a female yak, which is a dri.

A dri? Yeah. Yeah. A female yak is a dri. Yeah.

Right? Yeah. It’s a dri. And they cross a dri with a with a bull. Yeah.

And that gives you a dzo. A dzo. Dzo? The dzo tong. Long I said the female yak is a female yak.

The female yak is a dri. Right. And and they they cross that with a a bull. Mhmm. That makes a dzo, which is a male, and the dzomo was a Oh, I see.

Does the dzomo have milk? Dzomo, like They have lots of milk. They do? Yeah. Better than a dri?

More milk than a dri. So then they they would milk their The dzomo. Milk their dzomo. Yeah. They would get milk from from Oh, They would get milk from dris, but it was better to get them from dris because dris had more milk.

Alright. So did the dris and the Dzomos live in the ground floor? I’ve got confused. What what lived The under. The confound number.

You said one stayed out. Which one? So in general, the the wouldn’t stay inside. The would Alright. Because the dris would usually be staying with the herders.

Up on the hill? Yeah. Mountains? That’s that’s right. Oh, I see.

So there’d be six or seven dzomos Yeah. And along with horses. Oh. So it’d be about eighteen horses. It’s a very It’s big house.

Very big room. Oh, it’s huge. Well, I’m just going back to the house. But if the house was that huge, did the floor that they lived on, was that all one big, huge room, or did they have cushions? The the There’s very many rooms.

You each have individual sleeping rooms? Oh. Bedrooms? No. No.

Yeah. They didn’t have a tradition of sleeping together. Oh, that’s more like us. Oh, Oh. Yeah.

So even as a little boy, did he have his own room, or did he sleep with his nun? So at first, he couldn’t sleep by himself? No. So the person he stayed by with his mother, then when she died, he stayed with the auntie Yes. With the nun?

Yes. Yes. And stayed with her until it got bigger. Right. He would sleep with her at night.

Yes. Yes. Sounds like a. Where was the kitchen then? So on the second floor, there’d be a special room in the back to put a kitchen.

In the back? Yeah. They didn’t have chimneys or how smoke the smoke just stays there? So some of them had chimneys and some of them just had a hole. In the first floor between the second and third floors.

There’d be a hole, and this one would just go up into the third floor. But someone had chimneys all the way up through the roof. So some in in his house, there would be the the chimney didn’t go all the way to the outside. It just went up into the third floor about halfway. Mhmm.

And they were just they would would be made out of wood. Oh, cool. And then some of the and then then so remember, Chase, it didn’t go all the way outside. Someone would go all the way outside, and there’d be dirt. Yeah.

So the inside was just wood. Uh-huh. And outside, put earth for the chimney. Did did Rinpoche’s family have servants? Because they they had so many animals and such a small family.

They must have had some helpers. So they didn’t have any servants. So they had they three. So they had two male and one female servant. Right.

Right. And did they live in the house too? Yeah. So one of them stayed with the animals? Down Downstairs?

Up on the no. Up on the on the mountain. Oh, right. They would take care of their their dri. And then the other two had their own other two servants had their own house outside of their house.

They didn’t live in the house. They had their own rooms. More. Yeah. Place.

They didn’t stay in the Oh. In the house. So they had one child themselves? The the the couple. The and Kim.

Oh. So, yeah, the the man and man and wife had one one child. One question that I didn’t didn’t ask last week. Like, was there I mean, was the structure of the village, was there a head head man or someone in charge or that Siri, was a. So there was this head person.

They called him Undo. Undo. Undo. Uh-huh. I’m not sure what that mean.

Uh-huh.
