About this talk. In this two-minute course introduction, Amy Miller welcomes students to Buddhism in a Nutshell, an introductory series on Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan Buddhist practice. She frames the upcoming five two-hour sessions as practical self-discovery through investigation of mind rather than belief-based study. Buddhism offers concrete methods for positive mental change, she explains, and students are encouraged to test the teachings critically—applying what resonates with their life and setting aside what doesn’t. The course will combine lecture, meditation sequences, and reflection exercises to give practitioners direct experience with the nature of mind, pitched at complete beginners with no prior Buddhist background.

Hello, and welcome to Buddhism in a Nutshell. My name is Amy Miller, and I’ll be leading you through an introductory course that presents Buddhist philosophy, principles, and meditation, and particularly how it is practiced in the Tibetan tradition. This is a path of self discovery and development through a thorough investigation of your mind. What’s refreshing here is Buddhism offers you the possibility to make positive changes in your mind and therefore in your life. Here, I will simply offer you information.
It is for you to be discerning and thoroughly investigate what is being presented. If you find there is something useful, please apply it to however best suits your life and practice. If you find passages of little interest to you, then just put those to the side. This course will be presented as a series of five sessions of approximately two hours each. These sessions will incorporate lecture time to impart new information, along with some short sequences of meditation and reflection to give you a taste of exploring the nature of your mind.
