About this talk. Venerable Wendy Finster addresses a fundamental tension in Buddhist practice: how to reconcile karma, the law of cause and effect, with our humanitarian impulses when confronted with seemingly unjust suffering. In this 13-minute talk, she acknowledges that karma’s deeper operations remain mysterious without direct wisdom or clairvoyance, yet argues we can work with its basic principles. She explains karma as automatic natural energy—action and reaction—and clarifies that negative outcomes cannot manifest without pre-existing causes we have sown. The core teaching concerns purification: preventing ripening karma not by negating causes already created, but by removing the conditions necessary for those seeds to sprout, much as soil and sunlight allow a planted seed to grow. She concludes by introducing refuge and dedication practice as ways to consolidate positive energy in community.

I have my own reasons for doing that. And very briefly, that would be that it has been my experience that cynical as I am and have been, I’ve not seen them make one mistake. I tried to watch them. The thing is that I’m not prepared on issues such as those. You see, karma, the understanding of karma in all its intricacies and depth is the last thing that one comes to understand clearly before enlightenment.

So there are certain levels. You can understand the basic principles, and that’s the level that we can work on. But to understand a lot of the intricacies, they’re usually told in terms of analogies in the scriptures. The same way as in the Bible, you’ve got your proverbs and how things are told in analogies because you cannot clearly enunciate. You can give an idea of principles and then you give analogies to try and get a picture of how something’s working, how a natural law is working.

But apart from that, unless you have the wisdom, the clarity, clairvoyance to understand how these different karmas are functioning, then one has to come to a point where one will accept what somebody else is saying about it. But I think ultimately, it has to come down to what we’ve got to accept ourselves. We’ve got to be comfortable with ourselves with whatever standard we take. And I think that this issue is certainly something that’s worthy of a lot of discussion and thought, deep thought and questioning teachers. Yeah.

Yeah. I think it’s something because, as you say, it goes against our humanitarian impulse. Yeah. I agree with you. But I think that you’ll find that karma is the underlying law of cause and effect anyway, regardless of what you believe.

So that it’s impossible to experience an experience unless we create a cause to experience it. For instance, if you’ve not created the cause to die at a particular point in time, you might be the only one that survives a car crash. And it’s miraculous. It’s called in the paper miraculous. I can’t explain it. It’s airplane crashes, and people get up and walk away. Thing is that if it’s not your karma, you cannot experience it. It is impossible for you to experience a result of something that you haven’t created the cause to experience. You haven’t, so you see, karma is just an action-reaction energy.

As soon as you have something this way, you’ll get it this way. You know? It’s an automatic kind of natural energy. And once you’ve got that happening, it doesn’t matter what sort of belief system you put on top of that, whether it’s to teach you or not. My own personal way of accepting what you say is that I think it’s very good for our mind mentally to accept that because I think it’s true also that if we’re having a hard time experiencing something negative or heavy, it’s good to have the framework that you learn something from it because it’s true you are, and it takes a lot of the sting away from it anyway.

It can be fixed. Yeah. The karma is a whole other issue, and it’s getting on late. Karma is something which is just incredible. We can talk about it.

And I think really in terms of deeper levels of karma, there needs to be perhaps even a whole seminar and have teachers looking more deeply into the texts and talking about it and also from their own experience. Because the whole action of karma, what ripens first, how it ripens, how you can prevent things from ripening. You know, like the example of karma is like you place seeds in the ground, and then you have the conditions. So the seed is the principal thing. The conditions are like the sun and the soil, and those conditions help the seed to sprout.

So that if you’ve got a seed, I’m just doing the concept of karma. If you don’t have the conditions, it won’t sprout. So what purification is, what it means to actually purify negative karma is that you prevent, first of all, you prevent the conditions from arising. Okay? That anything specific about those?

I think just think about them, and I think perhaps if there’s still any questions in your mind, then discuss them at question time tomorrow. Tomorrow, what will happen is that the afternoon session will finish at four fifteen, and then we’ll go down to Buddha House. And probably sometime around five to six, about an hour. At five to six o’clock. And it’s basically, again, a way of providing the environment for a meeting of energies and a consolidation of energies. You look puzzled.

You look puzzled. Yeah. That okay then? So let’s dedicate any merit we might have generated during the session that may we quickly attain enlightenment because of this merit or this energy, positive energy, in order that I will become enlightened and be able to bring each and every being to enlightenment also. So beans are the thing, right?

Peanuts are the next best. Yeah. We need protein for your muscles. But what you do is, I mean, who eats soybeans on the right?
