About this talk. In this brief 3-minute session, Ven Sanghy Khandro guides practitioners in generating positive motivation before teachings and meditation. She presents three approaches: the altruistic wish to reach enlightenment to help all beings; working on yourself to increase positive qualities so you can bring more benefit to others; or, recognizing that some find the others-focused approach difficult, simply cultivating your own peace and happiness, which naturally radiates outward. She emphasizes that practitioners should choose whatever motivation feels most genuine and comfortable—a compassionate acknowledgment that sincere practice can begin wherever your heart is.

Generate a positive motivation as your reason for listening to this talk and doing the mediteachings. If you can generate the wish to be of benefit to others, for example, thinking that you would like to reach enlightenment in order to help all other living beings become free of suffering and reach enlightenment as well. Or you might think that you’d like to work on yourself to increase the positive aspects of your mind and decrease the negative ones, so that in your life, in your relationships and interactions with others, you’ll be able to bring more positive energy and be more helpful to others, and be less likely to bring negative energy and do things that cause problems for others. If it’s difficult to think in terms of helping others, then you might feel comfortable thinking that you’d like to work on yourself to make your own mind more positive, less negative, so that you yourself will be more peaceful and happy. Because even without intending to, if we ourselves are more peaceful and happy, naturally we’ll be able to bring more peace and happiness to others.
So generate some kind of positive motivation, either one of these or another one that you feel comfortable with, as your reason for listening and doing the mediteachings in order to make this as positive, meaningful and beneficial as possible.
