About this talk. In this 33-minute guided meditation, Ven Lobsang Namgyel teaches a comprehensive body-and-mind purification practice rooted in Tibetan Buddhist thought transformation. He opens with setting a selfless motivation, then guides practitioners through breath awareness and a methodical scan of the body from feet to crown, noting tension and sensation while observing how the mind’s character shifts at different focus points. The core practice involves visualizing negative emotions and past actions as black smoke in the chest, then calling down a luminous ball of healing light from above the crown—containing compassion, wisdom, patience, and forgiveness—which purifies the darkness on three passes, leaving the practitioner’s body and mind transformed into light. The final stage returns to breath meditation to integrate the practice. Suited for meditators of any experience level seeking practical methods to reduce harmful patterns and cultivate inner qualities.

Thinking: by doing this meditation, may I become a better person? May I be of more benefit to others? Less harm? Have more qualities? Less delusions, less negative actions, so that this time becomes very worthwhile, not just for yourself, but for all living beings.

So you set your motivation. And sitting comfortably on the cushion with a straight back, tongue at the top of the mouth, breathing through the nose, and breathing all the way down into the abdomen. And you can do the same thing of breathing in peace, breathing out thoughts. Again placing all your concentration on the sensation of the breath. As you breathe in and out through the nostrils, notice the sensation.

Try and place all your concentration there. And whenever a sound or a thought disturbs you, gently, patiently come back to the breath. Allowing your mind to settle, to become calm and present without thoughts of the past or the future. Just concentrating on the breath. Now focusing on your body.

Be aware of the position of your body, not being stiff or rigid, but sitting comfortably. Then you focus your attention on the lower part of the body, where your body is in contact with the earth. Feel the substance and the earthy character of your body. Concentrate for a moment on that contact, on the weight and the substance of this physical form. Pay attention to the character of your mind, your consciousness, while focusing here.

Now slowly and mindfully move your attention upward through your body. Pay close attention to every aspect of your body and your physical sensations. Note the areas of tension and relax them. If you need to, you can squeeze the muscles and then relax. You note sensations of coolness or warmth.

Notice places where one part of your body is touching another. So now you start with your legs, moving slowly upwards into your hips. Moving upwards into your belly, your waist, and the curve of your arms. As you continue to move upwards, you notice the rising and falling of your chest with your breathing. And the curve of your shoulders.

Keep moving upwards, slowly, mindfully, paying special attention to your shoulders, your neck, and your jaw. If there’s any tension there, you relax those areas. Moving still upwards, you notice the tilt of your head, and you move to your crown. Allow your attention to rest at your crown. Pay attention to the character of your mind, your consciousness while focusing here.

Is your mind’s character different while concentrating here than it was when you were focusing on the lower part of your body? What differences can you note? Now slowly move your attention back downwards through your body. From the crown through your head and your neck into your shoulders. Is there any tension in your shoulders?

If there is, squeeze your shoulders upwards, and then when you bring them down, you can think to yourself letting go of tension. So now your shoulders are relaxed. Allow that relaxation to go all the way down into your fingertips. Relax your chest and your back. Your stomach, and your hips.

The pressure of your body on the seat. Going all the way down your legs, into the knees. The feet. Now bring your attention to the part of the body that’s touching the cushion or the floor, or your body’s in contact with the earth. Again, focus all your attention at this point, And notice the character of your consciousness when focusing here.

Note the nature of your mind when concentrating here, and if it’s any different from your mind state when you’re concentrating on the crown. And having noted any differences. Then go back to the sensation of the breath. Breathing deeply all the way down into the abdomen, breathing out into the universe. So now we’re going to purify the negativities.

In order to do that, you need to feel that you want to purify them. You want to remove them. So bring to mind the negative emotions that have made you suffer, that have made other people suffer. Just generally think anger, hatred, resentment, intolerance, pride. Whatever you want to purify, you think of it and then you transform it into black smoke.

And you visualize that black smoke in your chest area. This is everything that you want to purify, including all the negative actions that you’ve done. And then above the crown of your head, you visualize a ball of light. This light has the capacity to purify the negativities. And contained in that light is the antidote to all the negative emotions that you’ve had.

Qualities such as compassion and love, wisdom, patience, tolerance, forgiveness. Think of all the qualities that you’d like to have, and it’s all contained in that ball of energy above the crown of your head. Now as that light comes down and pervades every part of your body, you see that black smoke being transformed by the light, or you can visualize it being pushed out through the lower part of your body. So you can follow the light as it comes in through your head, through the crown, down through the neck, through the chest, into the arms, down the torso, until it goes all the way down into the toes, completely removing every negativity, every negative action. Whatever you want to purify, you can purify with this light.

The second time the light comes down, immediately goes all the way down into your toes and starts to come back upwards. If there’s any negativities left over, it pushes them upwards and out through the crown of your head. The third time the light comes down, just like a light being switched on in a dark room, whatever negativity is left vanish as if they never existed. So every part of your body, the organs, the blood, the muscles, everything is transformed into the nature of light. There’s nothing solid inside.

Just visualize yourself having a body made of light so that you feel very light. Your mind is full of light. Just for a few minutes, try to concentrate on being light. Whenever thoughts or sensations or sounds appear, you transform them into light. Just keep thinking I am not my emotions.

I’m not my confusion. It’s not me. My mind is light. My mind is wisdom and compassion. So you identify with the quality of your own mind.

Any thoughts that appear, just transform them into light. Sensations appear in the body. Transform it into light. And just for the last few minutes going back to the sensation of the breath, allowing your mind to be spacious and calm and peaceful. Just breathing in and out through the nostrils.

Letting go of thoughts. Just always coming back to the sensation of the breath. Just three minutes more. Try to really hold your attention on the breath. And gradually becoming aware of the room that you’re sitting in.

The cushion that you are sitting on, and the meditation we have just been doing. In your own time, please finish your meditation.
