About this talk. In this 44-minute session, Kyabje Rinpoche addresses a practical frustration: students cannot sound the Sanskrit mantra exactly as written. Rather than insurmountable, he teaches through analogy that faith and conviction matter most—even a baby’s inarticulate cry is answered. He then covers the ninth yoga of verbal recitation: concentrating on mantra syllables (om, hum, phat) within the deity’s heart, proper pace and volume, and the mantra’s three-part structure representing all Buddhas’ bodies, speech, and mind. He explains why the first completion stage should precede mental recitation, detailing how focus on the four joy wheels generates bliss and emptiness realization. The talk concludes with proper sitting posture for advanced practice.

You should listen to this teaching with the motivation of attaining enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings. And for this, please listen. Contemplate, meditate, and this teaching on Naropa, which has the entire essence instruction instructions of the Chakrasamvara Tantra. And through this, I’ll bring and through such practice, I’ll bring good health for both oneself and others. So up to here, we reached to the ninth yoga, the yoga of verbal and mental recitation, and we’ll continue with ninth yoga.
So we have explained about the the mala and blessing the mala and the numbers of the mala, 111 beads. And then and also how to recite the with the concentration or what on with the So while doing a mantra recitation, one has to be single pointedly focused on the as one, as Vajrayoginī, at one’s heart there is the principal mandala and the principal deity; at her heart is the reality source, upon it, the moon mandala, and then pam syllable and surrounded by the mantra in anticlockwise. So once you recite the mantra single point single pointedly focused on that pam syllable, mantra mantra garland, and so forth. And through this, once you recite otherwise, if I recite the mantra for eons and eons while not focusing single pointed ly and letting while reciting the mantra with the mind of wandering, then even one recite for even one recite the mantra for eons and eons, the the effect will be very few, less. So while you recite mantra with single pointedly focused on the mantra, and so forth, and time to time, and think about the visualization of the the deities and all this recitation and so forth is done according with the mind thinking of renunciation, bodhicitta and the correct view.
If one does this with recitation then the effect will be yeah, one can extract the effect. Otherwise, just running a mantra with the mind want mental wandering then, the effect will be very low. So when one recite the mantra, one should should recite recite the the mantra without any faults, means to recite as it as recite it with its own exact pronunciation or exact sound. And while reciting mantra, you should not recite should recite it free of all these faults, don’t recite it so fast and not so slow Exactly. Not so fast like as Rinpoche said very fast.
And when you and not just not so slow that just cutting up bit by bit, and then so forth. And then not too loud, and not too low that even one cannot hear its sound. And and also should recite the make an exact sound for the vowels on top of the letters. Like, if there is a double a, then it should sound the louder sound. And if if there’s another vowels like and so forth should should should make a to think yeah.
So one should make a exact sound and make a greater sound for double vowels and a single lower sound for single vowels. So I’ll start the mantra exactly as it is. So as here, it is very hard for us to recite exactly the mantra the way it is described in the text because we have not really trained on the sound of the Sanskrit terms or Sanskrit yes, Sanskrit letters. But so and but once you do start to recite the mantra exactly and as much as one closest sound as much as one could. And the main most important thing is one should have a have a faith and conviction and belief in the mantra itself.
This is very important. So the the most important is to have a belief and faith in the mantra. And by having faith and belief in the mantra, even one does not sound the exact pronunciation of the mantra, it’s still one can still receive the benefits of reciting the mantra. It is it is because it is like, for example, a baby was calling out to you, a baby who has something wrong with its tongue that he cannot make a sound like give me a food, for example, but cannot make an exact sound pronunciation, like, I mean, a proper sound or something. But we understand, alright, he’s asking for food, so eventually he can get it even though he cannot make the exact sound.
So it is not there. Even if our mantras are not direct we don’t sound this exact sound, but just reciting it with the faith and the belief in mantra and calling Vajrayoginī, you can receive the benefits. So and the mantra which we recite is the mantra mantra of three om syllables. So it has three om, three hum, and three phat. And according to the master Jampa Gyaltsen has set forth that represents the body, speech, and mind of body, speech, and mind of three three kayas, sambhogakayas, and nirmanakaya.
And and according to the text, the text which eliminates the darkness of the generation stage has set for, it has the the triple om, triple hum, triple phat. This mantra has the whole essence and gist of the mantra or the secret mantra. And then it also the mantra has been split into three groups that which represents the mantras of three mantras of the the first first bit is Buddha Dakini. It’s the first part. And the next next mantra is the mantra, and the third mantra is the.
So it’s been split into three, it’s simple as three deities. So by combining the three mantras of the three deities so that the three om syllable mantra is formed. So the meaning of the mantra is the first bit, the what’s the Buddha Buddha. It meaning is the first mantra. The meaning of this is that the the wisdom wisdom of great bliss of all the Buddhas.
So the the wisdom of great bliss, which is which is which is like the mind of all the Buddhas and as it goes in the sky. So it’s got it’s been called the the the Vajra Vajra body or or represents the dharmakaya. So it’s like almost the beginning of the mantra, and sarva is all all phenomena or all. It’s actually, it’s all. And Buddha is the Buddha, and dakini is the dakini or the Vajrayoginī here.
So the meaning of the second is, the is is called called the has the intent a very vast meaning that it can be heard for the lineage, color, cause, object, sound, and the the object of expression. So in here, this context refers to as the object of expression that which is in the nature of the of non dual bliss and emptiness. And so for that purpose, it has been said called who is the body speech or speech or. The it’s the it’s been called the syllable hum here refers to as the object of mantra or the purpose of mantra recitation. And the third third third mantra is Vajra Vajra, and Vajra is the deity.
And so with the and being called the name is Vairocana, and Vairocana’s name. Yeah, inseparable or nondual bliss and emptiness is in the aspects of form body. So which so which symbolizes which are the Vajra body, symbolizes the emanation body. So the so the summary, if briefly speaking, then the meaning of the mantra is is the Vajrayoginī who is who is the who has all the the the three Vajras, body, speech, mind of all the Buddhas. So the reciting this mantra is not I mean, this mantra is very, very intense, and it has all the so reciting this mantra is very effective.
So it’s it’s not just Vajrayoginis. It has the entire includes entire essence of the essence of the entire Dakinis and also the body, speech, and mind of all the Buddhas. So it’s been text here, it’s said that so I have written this this this according as as it has been asked and answered, which which means that that it was asked the question to about this mantra recitation and meaning of it, and that that is the answer of. So it’s also been said that the the yeah. So mental the verbal recitation and mental recitation. So making a sound from one’s mouth and reciting the mantra is being called it’s called the verbal recitation.
Mental recitation is a recitation that does not make sound from one’s mouth. Just within one’s mind, one reads the one quietly sees and reads the mantra and during recitation, but reciting the mantra, but not verbally. It’s just mentally. So here are the the after the mental verbal recitation, it’s been set forth that one should according to according to the Sakya system as well as the the fifth Dalai Lama and also more likely in the which is practices that that just after the mental verbal recitation. And So it’s been set forth according to the Sakya tradition that after the verbal recitation, one one one one perform the mental recitation and then go through the two incidental incidental completion stages.
So here, it is according to Jetsün Dragpa Gyaltsen Rinpoche, it’s been said for that the first one of does the verbal recitation. And just after the verbal recitation and before the mental recitation, one trains in the first incidental completion stage. He was one of the great tantric practitioners of the Heruka tantra. So it has a reason of saying that there is a reason of saying that the first come first in first first in incidental completion stage is performed before the mental recitation. It is because during the during the verbal recitation at one’s heart, one had visualized the two reality sources and all the body mandalas are at one’s heart.
And then and so and then when so did this stage after that, one doing in the first completion stage, one brings all the reality source, body mandala, everything down to the navel or a bit lower or or at the navel. So it is once you have to place the realty source everything downwards at if one once it produce, it will produce bliss, then place it at the navel. So so the first first incidental completion stage is performed, performed and then next is the mental recitation and then the last or the second incidental completion stage. And the purpose of doing this is because during the mental the first generation stage, one that the reality source, I mean, center of it, two tips, the front and the back are the two bliss wheels. And at the four corners are the four bliss wheels, or joy wheels.
And so during the the first completion stage, focuses on the four corners, the joy wheel. And by focusing it, and that four joy wheel circles, spins, and by spinning, and through this, one one achieves or one attains the or experience the the bliss. And that bliss realizes or or yep. Realizes Realizes the emptiness. And through this one being on a on a on the bliss and emptiness and bliss and emptiness.
Yeah. So if I so through this one, experiences the bliss. And that if one does this, then it is very this practice is very so so as the reality, the heart and the mantra, doing that, one is not focused on the mantra. It is because it is inside the reality source. The four joy wheels are outside.
And by focusing it and gradually, all the joy wheels have been dissolved or collected at the heart. So by first focusing on the four joy wheels and producing bliss, and emptiness, so forth, it’s very effective to generate a realization or the insights of the insights of the completion stage. So it’s been said for if one does the if one perform the mental recitation before the first completion stage, then it becomes quite hard because because during the mental recitation, one one focused on the on the mantra, Garland. And then, say, say one perform a first completion stage after the mental recitation, then first one mind one is mind one’s mind is stuck to the reality source. It’s on the focusing on the mantra.
And then performing first completion stage, one has to let one’s mind outside of the reality. The which and then which becomes quite hard because because one has to during the completion stage, one has to to collect one’s mind into the central channel. So due to that, the first completion stage is set forth before the mental recitation. So so when one are just this first one, one has to sit on a on a proper position. It’s so here the position means the posture actually.
So first, one has oh, with the seven features and seven yes. Seven features starting from being in the lotus position, with the feet in the Vajra cross or Vajra position. And if one can, one should perform. If not, then the just through one’s mind. So Rinpoche, she was thinking, maybe I should let them demonstrate.
And the second is that one should not be gazing very upwards or straightforward. One one one’s two eyes being gazing towards the tip of the nose, you know, like this.
