About this talk. In this six-minute guided meditation, Thubten Chodron leads a recitation of preliminary prayers suitable as an opening to any meditation session. The core prayers invoke refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha while cultivating the intention to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. Chodron guides practitioners through the four immeasurable minds—loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity—then moves into prostrations, confession of negative actions, rejoicing in others’ virtue, requesting the teachings to remain, and dedicating all merit toward enlightenment. The format is flexible; practitioners may use this shorter version or substitute the longer opening meditation from an earlier session. No prior experience needed.

The following is a recitation of the preliminary prayers that were part of the longer opening meditation that you heard on track two. You can choose to do either the longer meditation or these prayers at the start of your meditation session. It’s not necessary to do both. I take refuge until I am enlightened in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. By the positive potential I create by practicing generosity and the other far reaching attitudes, may I attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings.

I take refuge until I am enlightened in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. By the positive potential I create, by practicing generosity and the other far reaching attitudes, may I attain Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings. All sentient beings have happiness and its causes. May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes.

May all sentient beings not be separated from sorrowless bliss. May all sentient beings abide in equanimity free of bias, attachment, and anger. Reverently, I prostrate with my body, speech, and mind and present clouds of every type of offering, actual and mentally transformed. I confess all my negative actions accumulated since beginningless time and rejoice in the virtues of all holy and ordinary beings. Please remain until cyclic existence ends and turn the wheel of dharma for sentient beings.

I dedicate all the virtues of myself and others to the great enlightenment. Friends, enemies, and strangers, my body, wealth, and enjoyments, I offer these without any sense of loss. Please accept them with pleasure and inspire me and others to be free from the three poisonous attitudes. Supreme good beings, fortunate ones who would cross over to spiritual freedom, illuminators whose wise means vibrate with compassion — to the entire line of spiritual masters I make request.
