About this talk. In this 8-minute teaching, His Holiness the Dalai Lama explores the five boundaryless actions — the gravest transgressions in Buddhism, including killing one’s mother or father — and the immediacy of their karmic consequences. He emphasizes there is no interval between death and rebirth in hell; the result arrives as instantly as a dropped flower petal falls. The Dalai Lama then addresses cosmic evolution, explaining how our universe evolved from divine beings to its present form without a definitive beginning — countless universes have cycled before and will cycle again. All sentient beings have existed since time’s beginning, accumulating different numbers of rebirths across realms due to varying karmic potency. The teaching emphasizes consistency with Buddhist reasoning.

So the Buddha Buddha said that there is no greater negativity that we can create than these five boundaryless actions. And amongst these were killing one’s mother and one’s father. And the reason they’re called boundaryless is because that when one dies that there is no interval between the moment of death and the entering into the hell of endless torture that just like as Venerable Che was displaying, dropping this flower petal, that there’s no moment when that flower petal pauses in the air. Immediately upon letting go it drops.

There’s no hesitation, there’s no interval, there’s no intermediate period. And the moment you let go it dropped. This is why it’s called boundaryless, that there’s no interval immediately having died then the result arises which is being reborn and tortured in this torture of hell. So in that explanation that was given that we were descended from divine beings with very long lives and we degenerated into our present situation. There was no reference to any type of beginningness to that.

This was purely a description of how our present universe evolved. But this universe is not the only universe that existed. There were universes previous to this particular existence, and there were universes previous to that existence. The universes are constantly evolving also, and this was just an explanation of how this particular universe at this particular time evolved. You won’t find a contradiction to reasoning within Buddhist teaching.

So all sentient beings have been around since the beginning of this time, but it’s not to say that they’ve taken the same number of rebirths because they have experienced different types of rebirths. Rebirths for example in the hell realms and celestial realms are much longer, extremely long periods of time due to the power of the karma which creates them. In the intermediate realms such as the human realm it’s extremely short as comparison. So we haven’t taken the same number of rebirths but we have all existed since the beginning of this time. And then the back page two, the long life prayer for His Holiness at the bottom on the right side.
