About this talk. In this 12-minute devotional invocation, disciples voice their spiritual struggles to Lama Zopa Rinpoche through poetic verse, using striking metaphors: lost children without a mother, moths drawn toward flames seeking happiness in painful things, and the darkness of ignorance that creates a false sense of self. They express their desperation about saṃsāra’s repetitive suffering, their inability to generate genuine compassion without his example, and their fundamental ignorance of the path beyond ego-clinging. The piece builds to urgent prayers for the Lama’s long life and for all sentient beings to receive pure teachings and generate bodhicitta, culminating in brief instructions on the liberating power of this invocation itself. Pitched at practitioners with devotion to the teacher.

Cry of your children, the disciples. Lacking the eye of wisdom, we stumble and fall, slip again and again into the fiery pit of our own defilement. Like the wild children who have lost their mother on a strange journey to an unfamiliar land, we don’t know our way, where to go, what to do. All we know, all we feel is lost, alone, and pain. The pain which all the glittering glories of this plastic world cannot seem to end, cannot make go away.

Lama, please help us. Please, please, live long. Now we have a chance, a chance to rise up, to wake up from the stupor of our long beginningless sleep, a sleep full of bad dreams and nightmares. We need your skillful guiding hands to shake us again and again, reminding us that our chance isn’t going to last forever. Lama, please help us.

Please, please, live long. Like moths attracted to a flame, we seek happiness in those things which can only bring us pain and never wonder why our suffering never ends. And in the darkness of our ignorance, there appears a phantom self who he will willingly serve as slaves, killing and stealing lives at his command, sowing a harvest of future pain. We need your wisdom light of truth to finally overthrow this ruthless ruler of our lives. Lama, please help us.

Please, please, live long. How can we hope to go beyond the narrow confines of our petty lives, of our egos, of our self-cherishing without your inspiration? How can we ever hope to know what real love is, what real compassion is without your example? Lama, please help us. Please, please live long.

Are not we who are sentient beings more important than Buddhas? Are not others more important than self? We must hold you to your word, your courageous resolve, which you in your infinite compassion and wisdom have taken upon yourself. Until Samsāra ends, until suffering ends, we are your responsibility. In the beginning of the Dharma, in the middle and in the end, you are Buddha, you are Dharma, you are Sangha, the jewel of the world, the jewel of our hearts, the jewel within the lotus of our Buddhahood.

To you, our father, our refuge, our supreme field of merit, our ultimate object of purification, our revered teacher, our holy spiritual friend, we, your children, your disciples, cry out in our pain. Please, please do not leave us. Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Khensur Rinpoche, Dalai Lama, the holy beings to have a stable life and to turn the Dharma well continuously, or if passed, to be immediately succeeded. Sentient beings to be able to receive the pure lama, sangha teachings in the mind of all sentient beings. This is the mantra.

And whoever comes to the house, by putting a step here, just by stepping here at the center, all the wrong conceptions are to be pacified immediately and the wrong views to be pacified immediately and generate all the realizations, especially bodhicitta.
