About this talk. Lama Zopa Rinpoche guides practitioners through a foundational meditation on mother’s kindness as the basis for compassion and bodhicitta. In this 45-minute teaching, he explores four dimensions: the gift of a perfect human birth enabling Dharma practice; protection from countless dangers during pregnancy and childhood; sacrifice of comfort, sleep, and livelihood despite hardship; and education leading toward the spiritual path. The teaching stresses that this kindness spans beginningless rebirths—mothers have repeatedly cared for us—and reaches a stark conclusion: failing to practice Dharma with this precious human body wastes her boundless sacrifice. The meditation uses visceral detail—labor pain, sleeplessness, filth—to anchor gratitude. Suited for practitioners prepared to work with strong emotion toward insight.

Then after that, totally cut off some impartial. You know? How about this? So after impartial mind, partial mind, rising anger and attachment, you see, when that is cut off, you know, when those two discriminating thoughts, you see, some minds closed, and see, and some far from the heart. So this definition of this ignorant, this ignorant means simply cutting, you know, having cut off the attachment anger.

So now, hold on. Visualize one, see, the same. See, mother and the mother right side, father left side, friend in the middle, or you see, when one does meditation, you see all sentient beings around. Then think, first of all, the kindness of the present life mother, kindness of her kindness of this life. Yeah.

Think. If she hasn’t accumulated, you see, if she if she, you know, if she hasn’t accumulated karma, you see, to receive me, to give birth to me? By now, you see, I wouldn’t have this perfect human rebirth. Which is the opportunity to practice Dharma. So very kind.

And then if she did not take care of me, even when I was in mother’s womb, if she did not take care of me, you know, then, you see, by doing abortions and so forth. And then, renounced me then. I wouldn’t have this perfect human rebirth, but by now, see all the opportunities to practice whatever Dharma I wish to practice, I have all the opportunities. It wouldn’t be this first month for this. My mother is extremely kind.

By not, if she did not take care, you see, then You see, During those nine months, you know, if she did not take care in her womb, you see. And then If she if she had renounced, you see, renounce to me, then you see. By by now. You see, by now, you know, I would be either either into the ocean, running with the fish, in between the rocks, between the rocks, or crawling on the trees and the bushes as insect and worms, goats, pigs. Not sure.

No, there wouldn’t be opportunity to make preparation for the happiness beyond from this life up to enlightenment. No way. I think. So you see now, this body, This is now, yeah. Now, you see it.

Because her kindness that she gave is they gave gave me this body, this, you know, this precious, this precious body. Now that’s now that’s qualified as effort and kindness. Each day, each hour, each minute, even seconds, whatever I wish, even I wish, you know, or to make to wish happiness, you know, happiness in future lives, you see, or then that I can achieve with this body, I think I can create a cause, you know. I can achieve this great meaning. The moral conduct, high training of the moral conduct, high training of consciousness, high training of insight.

And then, then even I wish the highest, the enlightenment, cessation, having all the qualities of the cessation and all the qualities of the realizations, I can achieve. Because with this perfect human body, I can practice bodhicitta. And whatever a great meaning that I wish to achieve, even each second, I have opportunity to accomplish. Today, from this morning until night, infinite merit that I have accumulated by practicing bodhicitta each time with the motivation of bodhicitta, inconceivable merit that I have accumulated by its prostration, by its offerings to the merit field. So all this merit that I accumulated on the object, sentient beings, good karma that I accumulated with the relationship to holy objects, for all everything, every single this merit that I came out today.

Today, then from you see, since I was since I was born, know, the after the end until the death, you see how much merit that I accumulated and accumulating, and that which I will accumulate, you see, in the future. All this pardon? If the mother did not give me this body, if she hasn’t been kind giving me this body, you know, giving the birth, you know, then wouldn’t have all this, wouldn’t have opportunities to accumulate all these merits. So all this merits completely that was given by her. All these good karma, given by her, you know, can be received by the kindness of her.

It’s a complete dependent on her. It’s very clear. So therefore, unbelievable kind that she gave me this body. So now, this is not the first time. And this is not the first time.

This mother my mother, you know, gave me a body which had the opportunity to practice Dharma numerous times, numerous times. I think not so much, you see, like when she was a spider, then she gave me body, not so much like that. I think the main thing to remember kindness is because I think more relates to Dharma. So in the past life, She gave in the past a number of times, you see, the body which has opportunity to practice practice holy Dharma. So feel the depthless, you know, depthless.

Uncount from a number of that or a number of that mother’s kindness have given the body. So, you see, feel this, you know, this death deathless, this kindness. So even, you see, even for this kind, you know, the you see, kindness having how kindness having given me the body, you know, That is allowed to practice Dharma, to create a cause for happiness. Just even for this, to repair. Even I I sacrificed my life to her, then, see, including the number of atoms of this earth, that much even I sacrificed very many times.

Even I sacrificed my life to her, to her, threw nothing to the bad kindness, just for even this even this first kindness. Now and then kind protected my life. The mother protected my life. So she protected, you see, me, within from harms, within from dangers for nine months while I was in while I was in her womb. You know, she tried to be careful in the diet, in the manner as much as as as much as she can understand, she she can think of, and she can manage.

And she, you know, she like this, she protected me from so many harms. And then then then you see even after came out of mother’s womb. Okay? From each day each day, then she protected me from hundreds of life dangers, from hundreds of hundreds of life dangers each day. Then, that is very clear.

You can see if one does not watch, if the baby is not watched within five minutes, even within one minute, Okay. Suddenly, it is suddenly, it is in the danger, you know, to fall down to to fall down or to put in knives or dangerous things, you know, in the mouth, you see. If it’s if it’s not watched, you know, suddenly, baby’s lives in the danger. Are they are they from animals, you know, the dangers, you know, or the vehicles and other from many other dangers, you see, living beings, non living non living things. Often, she protect so, you see, even even she didn’t have even she didn’t have time, by employ let’s say, by employing or, I say, by hiring by hiring somebody, you know, to look after.

Okay? The the major or the however, you see, constantly watched. You see, that one’s life was constantly taken care of, constantly watched. So then and when I was hum hungry, then get food. When I was thirsty, get drink.

And then, you know, hot and cold, you see, all that, gave, you see, mother protect when there was danger, mother protected me by giving clothings. Then when I was sick, she gave medicine. Oh, like this, protected my life from the dangers. What if my mother did not take care me like this? By now, you see, I would have had this perfect human body, which is all the opportunities to practice Dharma.

So unbelievable kind. Unbelievable kind. How kind my mother is. I find it very I find it very effective, very good example of it, very effective, you know, to see, you see, to see the to see the other mothers, you know, taking care taking care of children. You see?

Taking their children. Their children, you know, are very disobedient, you see, only giving only, you know, are giving trouble to the mother. You know? Mother constantly take care of the with much, you see. It’s like like a you know, like her heart, you know, doing that all the time watching the taking care, you know, cherished.

You see? One thing that, you see, that makes that makes me to think. So this this mother that I see now here taking care of a child, like, same way, you see, she took care she took care of me in the past, you see, in numerous times in numerous times in the past life. You see? Like this, she she took care of me.

You know? So here, you see very clear how incredible hardship that, you know, you see, the difficulty in our life she she she to experience, she has to go through. So you see? Then you see, you feel, you know you feel kind. Then as you feel kindness there, then at the same time, you see that brings the result loving kindness, compassion, etcetera, and equanimity.

So, however, you see, the these are what we see around what we see around us now, the other mothers taking care. So all these things are good all all these things are good med good meditation. You see? Excellent meditation to relate to relate to our our to relate to our own mother, you know, and part and, you see, especially if one does not remember. You know?

I have to use them as an example. So It is so difficult to make them happy. No? More more they are, more they are, the more they are, you see? And then see.

More difficulty. The mother has a, you know, I see, harder life. Okay. It is so difficult to satisfy to make happy each one. However, although this is not the first time, she has been kind to me, she, numberless times from beginning of this rebirth, you see, I’m giving you see, protected me from the protected me from the life danger.

So then, can mentally feel the depthless kindness that is in continuation of this present or mother, you see, protects oneself from life danger. Then, third, that she has been extremely kind, know, bore hardship for me. So this person like mother this person like mother, you see, bear so much hardships, you know? Oh, then, yeah, the during those nine months, all those pains, you see, then especially when I was coming out of them, she had got through an unbelievable pain. Risk, you know, that’s go through.

And then and then, even after I came out of the mother’s womb, she had to bear all you know, what I what I do what I did is I wanted to give Kaka and Pee Pee to the mother. You know? Again, again, making wet the cushions. Okay? And so day day and night like this, you know, and they had to had to touch, you know, the even though even though she herself is unable to touch her own, you know, dirty things, you see, but, you know, she she has to, say, a bear all the hardships, you know, the to clean, you see, all the filthy smell, you know, the kaka and pipi, you know.

Then, And then so much worry. Also, I do see worry, you know, the the, you know, health, you know, worry. See, might get sick. The shortest life and the sicknesses, you see, much worry and the fear. And then also, screaming day and night, you know.

I’m not I’m not giving any rest, you know, sleep even at night even in the nighttime. Even the times for sleeping, I’m not giving rest, you know, see, to sleep, you see, not allowing to have comfortable sleep. And then, always looking like like like her heart is being outside of her body, you know, came in the hand. Something like that, you know, or was kept warm by touching her own body heat, you know. And then one is fed, you know, one is fattened by the milk, the compassion, which was given out of compassion.

Then I was kept warm, but all the time, you see, you know, looking as they’re looking with the looking, you know, with the compassionate smile, looking with a loving kindness mind, the eye, the calling with sweet names, calling one’s name with a sweet voice. Calling one’s name with a sweet voice. And then some of the what is say, there are some of the hardships, I think, to to keep the to earn the means of living, you know, to take care, and to keep food and clothing. Then money that money that she earned, wasn’t it? With much hardships, with much frustrations, with much, you know, fear worries, you know, much exhaustion, you know, with much much hardship of mind and body, you see, which is the one that she collected, what she she spent for me.

You see? And then They could, you see, all the expenses, you know, in the school, some call there, college, you know, to have education. You know, all they know also worried, you know, you see, to not having happy life, you know, what’s gonna happen in the future. So much concerned. So if so if she well, like this.

Oh, and then also, you see, one thing is that what? negative karma. Creating negative karma. Okay? You see, what is with the body, spirit, mind, you know, take care of me.

You know? Mhmm. Or in order to take care of me, to have happiness for me, you know what? You know, in in say, in spite of giving you know, she didn’t care giving harm to others or with the creation of negative karma. Well, then, she and the like this, know, she took care me.

So does she build much hardships, you see, to take? See, if she did not bear all these hardships to take care of me, you see, by now, you see, I I wouldn’t have this perfect human body, which is all the opportunity to practice Dharma. So this is not the first time she has been kind to me, being in hardships for me. Numerous times from beginningless rebirth. Also, I feel the depthless kindness of this.

So now, then the fourth one, the fourth one, that we’re living in the part of the world that is giving the education. So when I was born, came out of mother’s womb, I was, like, warm, that like that, like a worm, like a fish. You know? Was worm crawling on the ground. Then she taught how to walk and and then how to speak.

Then I became I that I am able to be in the line in the groups of the human beings. That I could become a human being like this is by her kindness. And so if she didn’t if she did not send me to school, college support, you see, if she if she did not try to educate me, then, you see, by now, you see, cannot I would unable to write even my name. You know? I think that I’m able to I have I have, you know, this much education and that I can find jobs or can have money.

All this is by her kindness. By her kindness. So the that I have all these comforts, you know, food and clothing, house, by doing job. This is came from this is by the kindness of my mother. So especially especially that I have an unbelievable opportunity to do listening, reflecting meditation, the gradual path and gradual path to enlightenment.

You You know, that I have opportunity to study, to, you know, to read Dharma books, to write, read. Incredible opportunity to develop to develop a mind in the path to enlightenment. So this is completely by her kindness. So so this is not this is not the first time that she has been kind to me, leading me in the path to enlightenment. And so she did like this to me a number of times from beginningless rebirth.

And feel the depthless. So now, she has been kind. You see the four four ways. You know? You see, a number of times from beginning this is beginningless rebirth.

Even Buddha even Buddha cannot see the beginning the beginning of her kindness. You know? This my mother’s, you know, beginning. She, so having been mother, her kindness only started this many aeons ago. This this this much number of aeons ago.

There’s no such thing. There’s no such thing to begin. There’s no such thing, limitation of time. It’s at the beginning of time. Even Buddha cannot see the beginning of her kindness.

Omniscient mind cannot see the beginning of the her kindness. So it’s unbelievable. So now, So now, If I don’t if I don’t make it possible that I in my life, on this, you know, on this body to have bodhicitta, if I don’t make it possible to have this, you know, you see, by practicing Dharma. Then well, then then if I if if I use this body, mhmm, just to accumulate karma, it’s not used to practice Dharma. You know?

And then all this, you know, all this food, all all this, you know, food and drink, all I say, So much of the clothing, the material material that she gave me, you see, or what is called oh, spend, you see, that which belong to that which belong to how she gave me she she sacrificed and she gave me. You see? All all that’s complete wasted. I don’t if I don’t get to practice Dharma, know, live life only. Often, say, create karma.

Then, say, lose. Although, Although I was born just to give trouble to the parents, to cause trouble to other sentient beings. So it becomes only that reason. So it’s so this way is very, very sad. Yeah.

Actually, it’s like that. So now, you see, when we look at other children, when we look at others, so that should bring on oneself, you see. When we look at, let’s say, some mother has a child that is completely disobedient, and nothing he or she listens, only giving trouble, giving hard time. The mother doesn’t know what to do. She doesn’t know how to handle.

She’s trying her best If she has freedom to give even more enlightenment, she would give to the child. Love and compassion like this. So all these years, since conception was taken in the womb, all these years, unbelievable material, hardships with the body and mind completely used, become a slave. You see? But the child, you know?
