About this talk. In this 6-minute teaching from 1987, Lama Lhundup opens with a crucial reminder: meditation practice must cover three essential foundations — renunciation, the awakening heart or Bodhicitta, and the correct view of emptiness. He then addresses a question about the various god realms, explaining that despite their pleasures, gods possess the same three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance, making them trapped in saṃsāra like humans. The bulk of the session guides practitioners through a generation stage meditation: visualizing all sentient beings and loved ones in their suffering, developing determination to free them through attaining Buddhahood yourself, invoking the Buddha who descends and dissolves into you, your transformation into Buddha, then light radiating from you to purify all beings and transform them into Buddhas as well. The meditation closes with dedicating the merit generated. Suited for practitioners already studying the graduated path and familiar with visualization practice.

We definitely must meditate on the three paths of renunciation, awakening heart or Bodhicitta, and the correct view of emptiness. So we have a little bit of time. If you have any questions, you can ask them now. Relax. Don’t be tired.

Yeah, you have, think this. Yeah, the chin. So there are, you know, there are realms there are thousands of realms which are similar to, you know, this realm of where we live now as human beings in the god realms. There are various god realms. But these gods also have ignorance.

They have the three poisons, desire, hatred, ignorance. And therefore, because they still possess these three poisons, they’re called worldly gods. So now we’re going to do meditation. We’re going to imagine all sentient beings, all the people that we hold dear, our loved ones, and we’re going to understand, we’re going to see them that they’re suffering and that we can’t bear their suffering. We have to develop a determination to free them from their suffering.

In order to free them from their suffering, I have to attain Buddhahood. So we developed the thought, I must attain Buddhahood. At that time, we were just imagining yourself in front of you as clearly, as well as you can, the Buddha. And then the Buddha comes down and dissolves into you, and you actually transform into Buddha. You no longer have any of the three poisons.

You actually are transformed into the Buddha. And then from your body, light radiates out, and you’re having compassion for all these beings who are suffering. And light radiates out from your body, purifying all the obstacles and obstructions and giving them all realizations to the sentient beings about you, and they also transform into Buddha. And then now you’ve done your work. You and all sentient beings have attained Buddhahood, so you take you feel a great joy that now my work is completed and there’s no more suffering.

And then at that time, we’ll dedicate the merit from what we’ve done. Okay.
