About this talk. In this 23-minute guided meditation, teacher Karyn Williams leads practitioners through a sustained cultivation of gratitude. Starting with foundational posture and breath awareness, she moves systematically through gratitude for the body and mind, the earth below and stars above, family and human relationships, and the creativity and freedom available in human life. She then acknowledges the darkness and suffering in the world before reframing it as a source of compassion and appreciation for human resilience. The closing segment invites reflection on personal adversity as a teacher, inviting acceptance that difficult experiences contribute to becoming a better person. Throughout, the guidance is grounded and non-sectarian, suitable for practitioners of any tradition or background.

Yet again, into a meditation position, and just take a moment to settle once again even though we have been relaxed for a good half hour now. Always remembering a straight back so that we stay alert. The rest our whole body can be relaxed, but we can also maintain that straight back. And what we’re aiming to do in the next minute or two is just to calm our breath and get into our own breathing rhythm, just concentrating on our in and out breath as we just get into a gentle rhythm of our own. Now just allow yourself to feel thankful, thankful for your life, how fortunate it is just to be alive, alive right now in this moment together.

Just be thankful for that. Many people don’t reach the age that we are all at. Many people have harder lives. Just be thankful for being alive right now where we are. And feel gratitude for your body and yourself, acknowledging your weaknesses, relishing your strengths.

Be grateful that you have a mind that is able to explore this powerful emotion of gratitude. Take a moment or two to think of yourself and what about it that you really like, and be thankful for these qualities. It’s okay to like yourself and those qualities, so don’t hold back. And give thanks that your body supports your mind so well, and your mind in turn gives meaning to the experiences of your life and the emotions you experience, that it can hold memories to which you can return to find joy. Give thanks for your mind and body.

And now allow yourself to physically connect with the earth below your feet, feeling its mass, acknowledging that the ground you rest on brings forth and sustains all life on this planet. Appreciate the prosperous earth which gives a bountiful harvest every season. May we manage the abundance well and caretake our world so it will continue to produce its bounty. And as the earth offers its abundance and we receive realize that we have everything we need and more, and we’re grateful. Say a quiet thank you not only to the plant kingdom and how it sustains us, but also to all the creatures of the animal kingdom and the role that they play in our lives.

And thinking of the earth below us and the animals and the plants around us, we can allow a sense of deep appreciation for the interdependence of all life, where everything has a role and a purpose that supports the endeavors of something else. And be thankful you are human and able to appreciate this connection like no other species on earth. No other species would even think of it. How fortunate and be thankful. And think of the relationship between the earth below and the stars above.

Be thankful that you’re here in between the tangible and the wonderful and capable of experiencing and appreciating both. How good is that? Can’t help but be thankful for that. And now move your gratitude towards the people and the roles that they play in your life. Feel thankful for your family, which has nurtured you so that you can be here in this moment, feeding you when you’re a totally dependent baby and supporting you as you grew, caring for you, being happy for you.

Not all families are the same, but be thankful for the family you have, whoever and however you define that word. Be grateful for creativity interwoven into our lives, for human creativity, for music and art, film and architecture, all the inventions around us that we take for granted, and for your own creativity and that as others who enrich your life. Be thankful. And be grateful that you have the power of personal will and freedom. This is such a fortunate opportunity, and not everyone, in fact, very few on this planet have that freedom that you experience every day and take for granted.

We live in a lucky country, and that’s true. We’re grateful. And with that, think of the darkness in our world, of the strife, the fear, the anger, and unfortunately, the sickest aspects of our human nature. But we can acknowledge that the darkness in the human spirit can create, through contrast, overwhelming moments of joy, love, and compassion, where we see the true human spirit shine through, pulling together in times of adversity, sorrow, and terrorism. Be grateful to be human, grateful to have the compassion and love to look after others and feel for those who aren’t as fortunate as ourselves.

And be thankful for where you are in your life at this moment, you personally, what has brought you to who you are, Nurturing, loving, and adversity have all played a part in who you are, and some of our most valuable personal life lessons have come as a result of adversity. When you think of those or how you might be at the moment, maybe not as well as you’d like, maybe not as happy in relationships as you’d like, you can see that perhaps they will help you to learn a valuable life lesson. And you can say, I’m glad that happened even though it was hard at the time, even though it’s hard right now. I am thankful. I know I can become a better person by learning that life lesson.

And just relax for a moment or two longer and let that gratitude sink into your mind and permeate your physical body. Think of specific things in your life that you can be grateful for right now. And now feeling grateful and feeling joy, we can leave this meditation just slowly in your own time. Come back to the room. Start to wiggle your fingers and toes.

And if you need to stretch, please do. Open your eyes when you’re ready. Okay. Well, thank you very much everyone for coming today, I hope that you do hold that joy to you. And have a lovely day in the sunshine.

So we’ll see you maybe next week. Thank you. Thank you.
