About this talk. In this 46-minute teaching, Khensur Rinpoche explores the Heart Sūtra’s pivotal line—”there is no ignorance”—by examining the twelve links of dependent origination and their connection to the Four Noble Truths. He identifies ignorance as the root of suffering and wisdom realizing emptiness as its antidote. He explains that understanding emptiness requires listening to teachings and learning to identify what things lack true existence; what Dharma means as refuge, illustrated through the image of rescue from a raging current; how karma and afflictive emotions perpetuate cycling through rebirth; and why authentic teachers, teachings, and spiritual companions are essential. He then reads the Heart Sūtra line by line, discussing passages stating there is no wisdom, no attainment, and references the Ornament of Clear Realization (Abhisamayālamkāra) as its detailed textual framework.

According to a verse by Nāgārjuna, in which he says, Though true existence though Though functional phenomena which arise dependent upon causes and conditions are not truly existent, still there is an awareness which conceives of them to truly exist, this awareness being ignorance or misknowledge which grasps to the true existence of such phenomena. And independence upon such conception, the seven of the seven of the 12 links of dependent origination arise. 12 links of dependent origination arise. Do do you understand?

Can you hear So we discussed previously the 12 links of dependent origination and in connection with the line of the text which reads, There is no ignorance nor is the destruction of ignorance. So in terms of these 12 links of dependent origination, are the 12 links in terms of practice and the 12 links in terms of abandonment. The root of the 12 links which in terms of abandonment is misknowledge or ignorance. And then the root of the 12 links dependent origination in terms of practice is the antidote to to misknowledge or ignorance. That is, misknowledge is a distorted awareness, and it is the concept, the conception which understands the nonexistence of the referent object of misknowledge.

The conception, the awareness which understands the nonexistence of the referent object of ignorance or misknowledge is the antidote, and this is the wisdom realizing emptiness. So in terms of practice, by generating the wisdom realizing emptiness, which is in the discordant category, ignorance is abandoned, misknowledge is abandoned. By generating the wisdom which realizes emptiness, the discordant category, The discordant is that is to say, this knowledge is abandoned. So in dependence upon generating the wisdom realizing emptiness when it has in terms of the practice, then this has the ability to abandon the subsequent links. For example, the next link which it would be able to abandon would be karma, karmic formations, then consciousness, and so forth.

So this would bring about a gradual cessation of each of the 12 links serially, and this is method of the 12 links in terms of category of purification and one will attain liberation. So in terms of of abandonment, the 12 links sets out in detail the procedure of abandonment. If this abandonment were to be set forth in an abbreviated manner, it could be set forth as it will be later when the four noble truths are taken up. Is set forth in terms of the abandonment of true sufferings and true sources of sufferings. As an abbreviated manner of the abandonment, it it is in terms of the true sufferings and true sources of suffering.

In a detailed manner, it is an abandonment by means of the 12 links of dependent origination. And how how are the the 12 links abbreviated into terms of the true sufferings and true sources of suffering? The six causal links are abbreviated into true sources of suffering, and the six resultant links are abbreviated into true sufferings. And if if the six causal links were abbreviated, they would be abbreviated into karma and afflictive emotions. And with respect to true sources, there are no other than karma and afflictive emotions.

K. With Angala. So if if and how would the six resultant links be abbreviated? They are abbreviated as was mentioned in terms of the true sufferings, and these would be enumerated in their most abbreviated form in terms of birth and aging. And then in terms of the category of purification, the 12 links are abbreviated in terms of causes and results.

And in terms of the Four Noble Truths, then the resultant links are abbreviated in terms of true cessation and the causal links abbreviated in terms of true paths. And as we we’ve discussed the five aggregates, the 12 sources, the 18 constituents or elements, and these are all abbreviated into the 12 links, and these, again, can be abbreviated down to the four noble truths. So, really, if four noble truths are the condensation of all the various practices and abandonments in terms of, you know, if something is to be practiced, then it’s going to be contained within the Four Noble Truths. If something is to be abandoned, it’s going to be contained within the Four Noble Truths. It is the great wave of practice that’s extremely beneficial.

And likewise, all that is to be all the faults which are all the various abandonments, that is to say the various faults which we are to abandon, and all that is to be practiced are contained within the Four Noble Truths. In terms of what is to be practiced, then this is the two paths, and this contains the various paths of the hearer, the solitary realizer, the various grounds and paths of the universal vehicle, the Mahāyāna. But additionally, the result of all of these paths, the result of the hearer’s path, result of the solitary realizers, the result of the paths and grounds of the universal vehicle, these are all true cessation, and these are all also contained in the four noble truths. So it’s extremely important that we know well the presentation of the four noble truths that contains what is to be abandoned and what is to be cultivated. Therefore, we should understand it.

The Dharma is the means by which we can eliminate from the root our suffering. It is the way we eliminate our various faults. And what is the Dharma? It is true cessation and true paths. Amongst the objects of refuge, when we say namo buddhaya, namo dharmaya, namo sanghaya, Why is that?

Because the the in the what does the word Dharma mean? It is a Sanskrit word. In in Tibetan, it is pronounced the word is chö. And it means literally to hold, to hold or to protect. So the word skyong ba means to take hold, to hold, to protect.

So, the sense of the word Dharma, literally means to hold or hold back or to draw, to take hold in the sense of it is a means by which we are eliminating our suffering, and we’ve talked about the various types of suffering such as birth, aging, disease, and death, and these are all arising dependent upon the cause of karma and afflictive emotions. So such a person who has these causes within them, the Dharma acts to draw them out of these sufferings, to take hold of them and to protect them. It leads them to liberation. It protects them from these sufferings. So it has all these connotations of leads and draws back and protects.

So, you know, analogy would would be that if it rained very hard and there was this this rushing torrent of water and someone was being swept away by this current of water and another person drew them out of this current. That is to say, save them. They let them they freed them from the sufferings and the fears involved in being carried away by this water out of their compassion. So, Dharma has this connotation of being freed from the very suffering, or in this case, like the fear which is involved in being swept away by this current, and acts to save or to protect, to act as a refuge, to liberate this person from that situation, to save them, to hold them back. So the sources of our suffering are karma and afflictive emotions, and this is analogous to this rushing torrent of water, which creates various types of sufferings of fear, anxiety.

And so the water is creating these various fears, bringing about this result, which is suffering. So this person is like ourselves who are circling within cyclic existence. And we likewise are being carried away by this current of karma and afflictive emotions that and how does this process operate for ourselves in terms of having taken rebirth as a human, then we are uncontrollably swept to another rebirth as in the state of a god, and having taken that, then we are carried further and taken rebirth as an anti god, and then as a hell being, as a hungry ghost, as an animal, and we’re continually being swept through cycling through these six types of migrations taking these various rebirths. It is the the wisdom realizing emptiness, that is to say, two paths by means of which when they are generated are able to eliminate that factor which forces us uncontrollably to circle within cyclic existence, that is to say, the factors of karma and afflictive emotions that this wisdom realizing emptiness eliminates the karma and afflictive emotions, and then one attains a path of liberation and the bliss associated with it. So it’s necessary for us to generate these two truths, the true paths and true cessation, initially generating true paths and dependent upon that generating true cessation.

If we don’t generate these two, When do we generate true paths? It is when we have a direct realization of emptiness. When we have direct realization of emptiness, we generate a true path. And preliminary to generating the direct realization of emptiness, it’s necessary for us to meditate on emptiness and develop a realization of emptiness which is not direct. In order to generate to generate the wisdom realizing emptiness, it’s necessary for us to meditate well.

So, therefore, it is necessary for in what is it necessary to do in meditation on emptiness? It’s necessary for us to first listen and read books, and then we must identify what it is that things are empty of. For example, we someone just say, Who is Tashi? And and you don’t know who Tashi is, but if they say, oh, there’s Tashi. Oh, yeah, I know Tashi, I recognize Tashi now.

Then once having recognized him, then we will be able to identify him in the future. Likewise, we must be able to identify we won’t be able to understand emptiness. We must be able to understand to identify what things are empty of, and this is depends upon the process of listening and meditating. So it’s good for us to understand what it is that how the Dharma acts as a refuge for our suffering, the way it acts as a refuge. The root of our suffering is this knowledge, ignorance, and the Dharma is the wisdom realizing emptiness, which is an opposite of ignorance.

So by generating the wisdom realizing emptiness, then we gradually bring about a cessation to misknowledge or ignorance. And therefore, all the results which arise from misknowledge begin to cease. In order to generate the wisdom realizing emptiness, it’s necessary that we rely upon the the teachings of someone who has meditated and gained an experience of the practice of emptiness, such as the Buddha. In order to carry on our practice, it’s extremely difficult to do it by oneself alone. It’s necessary to have those who assist us as companions in our practice.

Because in order to create the situations for listening to the teachings, it’s extremely important. It’s important to have the assistance of others in creating the situation for listening. It’s important to have the assistance of others in creating the situation for meditation. And so it was necessary to have these companions in order to create these situations. Additionally, we can look to other practitioners, how they are progressing, what they did to develop along the path.

And these others that we rely upon, our companions in our practice, are the spiritual community or the Sangha. So if we have excellent teaching excellent teacher, we have the excellence of the Dharma and excellent companions, then we are going to make quick progress in our practice and gain realizations. We will be able to this will be a tremendous benefit in finally removing all our various faults and bringing the consummation all excellent qualities. So if an authentic Dharma is one which is which which acts to eliminate our afflictive emotions, which is in fact able to eliminate our afflictive emotions from their various roots, which is able to bring about a decreasing of our afflictive emotions and is able to bring us finally to a consummate happiness, complete happiness. So this is this type of Dharma is a is a unerring authentic Dharma.

So the great practitioners of Tibet, the Kadampa practitioners, they would say if it acts as an antidote to one’s afflictive emotions, then it’s Dharma. If it does not act as an antidote to one’s afflictive emotions, it is not Dharma. And with respect to the teacher of the Dharma, what we really need is someone who has the consummate, the final experience of the teaching. And in terms of our companions in our practice of Dharma, it should be those who are practicing in a correct fashion and those we have a liking for, those who carry out and make effort and meditate and have views which are harmonious to ourselves, and such companions are extremely beneficial. In order to be able to practice the Dharma well, in order to understand what is to be adopted and rejected, one must understand well the four Noble Truth.

So as the text reads, that there is no suffering, no cause of suffering, no cessation of suffering, and no paths. And this is as we explained previously, that for the meditative equipoise of a superior on the 10 grounds who is realizing emptiness, the four noble truths do not exist. For that awareness, the four noble truths do not exist. We’re we’re reading through the the sūtra, the discourse, and now it comes to there is no there is no wisdom. So this I usually translate it as exalted wisdom.

It’s not just wisdom, it’s exalted wisdom because here it means a path. A path is just not general wisdom, but a path, which is exalted wisdom. And as far as the Tibetan lesson for you, there is a if the word for exalted wisdom is if it rather than having the vowel a, if it had an e, it would be iche, which would be mental consciousness. So here, this where it says there’s no exalted wisdom. Here is in within the exalted wisdom is contained all the various types of paths such as the 16 moments of the Four Noble Truths, if we were to in terms of from our understanding of the perfection of wisdom sūtra, we know that.

And then there are there includes the 37 harmonies of enlightenment, all the paths of the universal vehicle, hearer, the solitary realizer. Then there are the those which are are exclusive to a Buddha, the wisdom exalted wisdom of a Buddha, such as the various 10 powers and the and the four fearlessnesses. And if we were simply to that all of these types of wisdoms do not exist for a superior and meditative equipoise on emptiness. If we were just simply to list them in an abbreviated fashion, they are said that all the various bases, bases, paths, and fruits bases, paths, and fruits bases being the aggregates, the sources, and the constituents paths being the exalted wisdoms that we’ve just the various exalted wisdoms that we just listed, and the fruits, that is exalted wisdom within the continuum of a Buddha. None of these exist for a superior’s meditative equipoise on emptiness.

So these are these various paths, exalted wisdoms are set out in detail in the the ornament of clear realization, the Abhisamayālamkāra, for the perfection of wisdom. And then the text goes on, the discourse goes on to say, There is no attainment and no not attainment. By attainment, it means the attainment of paths. That is to say, the generation of the development of paths within one’s mind. And by non attainment, it means the various attainments that we have not generated.

For example, we have not generated the various qualities of a Buddha, that we have not attained the various paths, as I say by attain it means we haven’t generated them, and all of these attainments and non attainments do not exist
