About this talk. In this three-minute introduction, Amy Miller tells the early story of Śākyamūni Buddha’s birth and childhood. She describes his miraculous birth in Lumbinī, Nepal—his mother Queen Maya’s auspicious dream of a white elephant, and the remarkable manner of his arrival, accompanied by lotuses springing from his footsteps. Miller then explains the prophecy told to his father the king: the child would either rule the kingdom or become a spiritual seeker. To ensure his son became a king, the father shielded young Prince Siddhartha Gautama from all suffering, raising him in luxury and splendor within the palace walls. She traces his early excellence in all pursuits and beauty, setting the stage for the pivotal encounter with suffering that would later transform him. A foundational overview suitable for those new to Buddhist history.

So in introducing the life of Śākyamūni Buddha, it’s a rather extraordinary story. The Buddha was actually born in Western Nepal in a town called Lumbinī. His mother, Queen Maya, had had a very special dream when she became pregnant of a white elephant. It seemed to be a very auspicious sign that she would have a special birth. And when she was to deliver, she was with her maidens, and they got permission to visit her family home and to travel, I think, because she knew she was giving birth.
And she went to this Lumbinī grove, and the story is that she reached up to grab a limb of the tree, and the baby Buddha sprang out of her side painlessly. The child was more than a newborn, extremely alert, and it is said that he took several steps and lotuses sprang from the steps. And there were many, many signs that it was a very extraordinary child she had given birth to. The Buddha was born approximately around five sixty three BC, about two thousand five hundred years ago. So after being born in Nepal, he lived in India near the border of India and Nepal, was born to a royal Indian family.
And the king, his father, at the time of his birth was visited by a seer, a prophet basically, who predicted that was told that your son will be the heir to your kingdom. So, basically, he would be the next king. Or he’ll be a seeker, meaning a seeker of the truth, a spiritual person. So the king obviously wanted his son to remain in the kingdom and to be able to lead the kingdom when the king no longer did. So he shielded Prince Gautama, which was his name at the time, Siddhartha Gautama, and he shielded him from seeing any suffering in his life.
But basically, the Buddha’s mother passed away shortly after his birth, but he was too young, most probably to note that. He was raised, by an aunt and lived a very, very blessed life in the kingdom, full of luxury and splendor, having every single thing he wanted. He excelled at everything he did. He was very, very beautiful. And he eventually married and had a child.
