The Eight Verses of Mind training
by Geshe Langri Thampa
(translated by I. Durovic)
1. With the thought of enacting
For all sentient beings the supreme meaning,
Superior to a wish-fulfilling gem,
May I always uphold cherishing them.
2. Wherever and whomsoever I befriend,
I will behold myself as the basest of all and
From the depths of my thoughts
May I always uphold cherishing others as supreme.
3. In all conduct, I will investigate my continuum
And as soon as the afflictions arise,
Since acting so would be inappropriate for self and others,
May I oppose them face to face with forceful methods.
4. When beholding sentient beings of an evil nature
Fiercely oppressed by sin and suffering,
Just as discovering a treasure of jewels,
May I uphold cherishing the rare ones.
5. May I take upon myself the loss
Of inadmissible berating and slander
On account of the envy of others
And proffer victory to others.
6. Even should some whom I had
Great hopes of helping,
Most wrongfully harm me,
May I view them as holy, Spiritual Teachers.
7. In brief, directly or indirectly,
May I proffer benefit and happiness to all mothers;
May I secretly take upon myself
All the travail and suffering of mothers.
8. May all of these as well be untarnished
By the stains of the conception of the Eight [worldly] Dharmas and
Through being conscious of phenomena as illusory,
May I be freed from the fetters of predilection.
